1 "Before Oct. 16, 1991, the Central Texas town of Killeen was perhaps best known for its proximity to the Army base at Fort Hood, and Luby's was known only regionally as a popular cafeteria chain. But on that day, both came to be linked to what was then the worst mass murder in U.S. history. At 12:45 p.m., 35-year-old George Hennard of nearby Belton drove his pickup truck through a window at the Killeen Luby's and killed 24 people." 24 people dies, he was a former soldier and was upset about Clarence Thomas hearings, didn't like women and various other things said after he committed that act. Plus 76 suicides at that base since 2003. There has been more than one murder/suicide. Sep 12, 2008 5:55:53 EDT "KILLEEN, Texas — The dispute that led a Fort Hood soldier to kill his lieutenant and then himself may have been sparked by missing military equipment. Killeen police said Tuesday that 24-year-old Lt. Robert Bartlett Fletcher of Jensen Beach, Fla., had gone with a staff sergeant to talk to a 22-year-old specialist under their command. The specialist was set to be discharged soon, and some equipment was missing. Police called to the scene on Monday saw the specialist shoot Fletcher to death before killing himself. The staff sergeant was not injured." And domestic violence cases that also ended in murder/suicide. The answer that this one person had different religious beliefs or cultural attitudes is overly simple, it is an easy popular answer but it overlooks a lot. There is something much more serious going on here. |

1 That may be true though his background, beliefs and current circumstances would have all played a role just as the other mass murderer in that same town had a background that led to his hate of blacks, women and general rage. He deserves to be punished for this act, but the bigger question is whst triggered this and the others, what is going on at that base? To try and politicize this or dismiss it with some glossed over convenient answer is a diservice to everyone especially the people who remain at that base. |

1 Says who? Look at ANY police department, beating up and killing the mentally ill and kids! Everyone in this Country is learning by example: If it's okay for the police to do it, so can I! Rough Economic times, over-zealous cops and less citizen rights is the breeding ground for these kinds of acts to happen. Don't pretend that its just crazy people doing this kind of thing, look around you. In my state there were 3 murder-suicides in the last week ALL OF THEM DUE TO ECONOMIC HARDSHIPS, NO JOBS ETC. Who to look to? |

1 I don't want your peanut butter but you are so annoyingly stupid I may shove you face in it. It will be an independent act encouraged only by your own behavior. |

1 I didn't say it was just crazy people. The economy is not the only answer either as some of these acts had no relationship to that such as the man who went off and killed people at the health spa. I notice that many of the posters on topix seem to be anti-cop and anti-government and even that encourages violent acting out. I am not denying that incidents happen, that cops and others overstep and abuse their authority. All of that is true, but exaggerating it here and in the media causes a skewed perception that benefits no one and encourages those extreme fringes. Fort Hood has a long history of problems and it is something more than one individuals choices. |

1 I do not perceive exaggerated authority abuses, I live and work within a community full of violence by cops and given permission by government officials, I have to deal with their victims! So please don't act like it doesn't exist or that I am anti-government in a way that encourages extreme violence. I do not. In my community the cops DO get overly violent and there are MANY folks working within our local government who point that out through the media a lot. So I am not the only one. I don't speak for everyone who posts on topix, but I think you are seeing posts in a way that encourages "turn a blind eye" attitude. I don't see anti-government sentiment as much as you do on here. As for being anti-cop, you do have a point there. I really have no respect for the majority of them. Most(not all)are not very bright and I take offense to dumbing down the written portion of the test's required by the state to become an officer, as a direct result of they're low IQ's and inability to judge objectively they make fatal decisions out on patrol and they forget things like crazy, it makes my job hard most of the time. They don't take direction well and they are all very egotistical, rude and arrogant to a fault! So yes, I have an anti-cop attitude, but it comes with years of experience working with them!! |
