I agree with the Yahoo "best answer" and it's just common sense, do it every day a little bit more at a time and push the envelope. And if you feel the stretch getting to be too much, don't do it – you will be setting yourself back days if not weeks by injuring or carrying something like a ligament or un-stretched muscle! I went through the same thing when I started yoga, sitting on the floor I had friends take a hold of each foot as I leaned back in my arms, and open my legs wider and wider until I told them to quit and then we held them there until everything relaxed and the stretching pain stopped. After only a week or so I was going wider than I ever thought possible! And it feels really good once you get there, remember that the degree to which you can spread your legs is limited by the soft tissues flexibility, not the hip joints. but those are 'ball and socket' joint and have incredible range of motion.
