Why thank you, we're all good spinners here! Though I'd like to think I'm spinning facts into a mind blowing weave of realization and understanding!(hee hee)
1. I'll give it to you that the Congress (lead by Dems) in the 80's did hand in budgets that made the debt. However, it's not SO simple as that. It's easy to pass tax cuts. It's hard to cut programs. The Reagan admin use the tax cuts to dry up funds specifically for programs THEY didn't like! In addition, Regean and the Republicans refused to cut their pet programs while insisting that the Dems cut theirs. So, the deficit grew. In present day, one could argue that the Republicans (since they now control all branches) have LESS of an excuse because they've shown that their party can't cut the budget, EVEN when they hold all the cards! It seems a tad hypocritical. After all you can't blame the dems for being pork pandering morons when you, as the majority, with nobody to blame but yourself, does the same!
2. Obviously you can SAY the economic boom of the 90s was a continuation from the 80's if you want.
I like to ask Reagan critics how many federal programs Reagan eliminated. The answer is none. If Reagan couldn't do it, no one can. Once you create a federal program it develops a freaky twilight zone existence of its own, regardless of how inept it is (for instance, 72% of what is spent on welfare goes to the bureaucracy and only 28% to the recipients). The whole thing's a disgrace, but also a reality.
I'll give you this much. The Republicans over the past several years have shown they can spend money with the best of them. I still think the Dems, if in control, would have spent more, but it would still be a case of dumb (Republicans) and dumber (Democrats).
As for Clinton's huge tax hike of 1993, the sexual predatory SOB was very lucky it didn't derail an already robust economy. It certainly didn't contribute to it (tax receipts were actually down 1 to 2% for the mid-Nineties but the economy was so much on fire that it didn't really matter).
Want to increase federal revenue? Cut taxes and you will get much more tax revenue at a lower tax rate. As I pointed out before, Reagan cut the top marginal tax rate from 70% to 28% and he almost doubled federal tax revenue. Those against tax cuts have no answer for this.
Once again the budget projected surpluses were due to the Republicans and not to Clinton. Clinton predicited $200 billion dollar deficits in 1994 as far as the eye could see. He actually had the gall to say that he balanced the budget minus interest on the debt. That's why he's not called Slick Willie for nothing.
Bush never claimed we'd have a surplus, at least not that I know of, but what has happened is that his tax cuts have produced more federal revenue (surprise, surprise!) and thus the deficit is not as large as initially projected.
As for the war in Iraq, I wonder how many people understand that it is but one chapter in a very long book which will take fifty years to read. John Keegan, the great British military historian, shortly after 9/11 wrote an article that maintained that the West will be in a war with fundamentalist Islam for the next half century. I find that the more a person is inclined to criticize George Bush for going into Iraq represents a direct proportionality to that person's inability to comprehend the wisdom of Keegan's assessment. Today's events should be but one more reminder of the war to the death we are in. Sadly, the Left in the West (and a few isolationists on the right like Pat Buchanan)are as clueless as can be about this verity.
Good arguing with you. I like it.

It is funny to hear Britain's outgoing ambassador to Iraq getting worried about the spilt of some country on ethnic lines, it should split according to some British official Lines.

I want to thank you two for some excellent debate - My own opinion is America is too eager to get involved in war and should only get involved as a last resort. Taking on the Taliban was the correct decision because they housed the terrorist training camps. History will show the invasion of Iraq was a mistake - I believe that Iraq in its current form could only be run by a dictator. The blind support for Israel is also unhelpful as it fuels hate against the west. I am not sure if America is supporting Israel or Israel is fighting Americas war. War will never solve anything unless it is backed by the people.
