NEW YORK TIMES: The Obama administration is proposing to open vast expanses of water along the Atlantic coastline, the eastern Gulf of Mexico and the north coast of Alaska to oil and natural gas drilling, much of it for the first time, officials said Tuesday.

The proposal a compromise that will please oil companies and domestic drilling advocates but anger some residents of affected states and many environmental organizations would end a longstanding moratorium on oil exploration along the East Coast from the northern tip of Delaware to the central coast of Florida, covering 167 million acres of ocean

World Oil Situation

World oil consumption is increasing at a rate of more than two percent per year (red curve), forcing oil prices to explode, which in return forces a downturn in global economy.
This trend is compounded now that China, India and other emerging industrial nations are taking an ever greater share of world oil production

That's funny, the majority of oil imported into the US is from us here in Alberta Canada...and it's non-OPEC oil.

Although Canada is the largest supplier of oil to the U.S., it only supplies 20% of the total U.S. consumption.

Now compare that to the next largest OPEC supplier.

Plus oil exports from my neck of the woods to the US market are growing exponentially...something most Americans don't know about.

There's billions of dollars of expansion of the Athabasca oil sands on the books right now...~90% of that bitumen will end up in the US.

The middle east is becoming less and less of a consequence to US oil needs.

Creston, BC is my neck of the woods. I know full well what is going on in Alberta. I also know there are huge efforts to control the environmental damage being caused by the oil sand extraction. That will be a factor in price sooner or later.

While the Middle East is becoming less of a factor as far as oil imports to the U.S are concerned, I would point out that Saudi oil is supplying China and will aid in China's rise over the U.S. economy. The U.S. putting all it's oil eggs in one basket is a dangerous thing. It's all so inner-connected.

Rather than tear up the surface of the planet..couldn't hemp replace at least some of the demand? It's cheap and doesn't damage the earth. But that is another subject.

Actually moron, my response was in reply to your off topic post.

You can't discuss anything intelligently trill.

All you can do is cut/paste (see shill) and troll.

Well Nancy, you should know then that China as well has interest in terror free Canadian oil....you should also know that the eviromental impact issues are being addressed and that far left organisations like the NDP have blown them out of proportion to begin with.

And Nancy, if you think hemp is going to fix all of our woes you've been reading High Times too much...but I'm willing to follow the flow regardless of what energy solution would be best for you and I...and the rest of the world.
