What is the cornea?
The outermost layer of the eye is called the cornea. It is the clear, dome-shaped surface that covers the front of the eye. Practically like the watch glass of a wrist watch, the cornea is a powerful refracting surface and provides about 2/3rd of the focusing power of the eye.
It becomes a clear window to look through and its clarity is therefore critical for good vision. Diseases of the cornea lead to loss of its transparency, thus reducing the vision. Injury, infection, genetic diseases and malnutrition can cause impaired functioning of the cornea.
In corneal transplant surgery, the surgeon removes the central portion of the cloudy cornea and replaces it with a clear cornea The surgeon places the new cornea in the opening and sews it with a very fine thread. The thread stays in for months or even years until the eye heals properly (removing the thread is quite simple and can easily be done in an ophthalmologist's office. Following surgery, eye drops to help promote healing will be needed for several months.
The transplanted tissue will enable the patient to regain much of the eyesight lost by the condition which damaged the patient's own cornea. The surgery can also eliminate symptoms due to the corneal condition.

What is Corneal Transplantation?
Corneal transplantation / keratoplasty/ corneal grafting is the surgical procedure that restores sight in patients suffering from corneal blindness. In this surgical procedure, the diseased opaque cornea is replaced by a clear healthy donor corneal tissue which restores sight by allowing the light rays to enter the eye through transplanted clear cornea. This procedure of corneal grafting is possible only on the availability of donor cornea by process of eye donation.
Preparing for a Corneal Transplant
The corneal replacement surgery can take place only once a donor is found.
Routine laboratory tests, blood tests, and X-rays are performed.
The ophthalmologist examines the eye in detail, and discusses the various surgical options available to the patient.
What is the significance of the cornea ?
The cornea is the transparent front surface of the eye. It is an important optical structure through which rays of light enter the eye. Any damage or injury to this delicate structure can lead to permanent loss of corneal transparency or in other words cause clouding and opacification.
