I remember him all too well Welch. I'd only left the unit a few months before and was living in Alabama. Steve had planned on retiring to his home town of Cullman - just 50 miles from where I was living - and we had made plans to get together as soon as he was out. He wanted to open a TV/radio repair shop there and be with his extended family.
It was around midnight the eve before his funeral that Valerie called to give me the news. She'd been trying to locate me for days but unable to since I had intentionally gone off the grid. I'd just returned from a mission south of the border (got hooked up with a spec ops reserve unit) where we'd lost a guy and now she told me Steve was gone. I was devastated.
It was a freezing cold and rainy March day when we buried him. Valerie held up well and the boys, too young to really understand, stood by her side and shivered from the cold. About the time taps was played it began to sleet. When the honor guard handed Valerie the flag I lost it.
My wife and I visited Valerie and the boys the following year when they lived in Decatur, AL. She told us then that she was moving out of state but I don't recall the location.
For 20 years I visited his grave every March until one day I just stopped. Two decades is a long time in getting over something or someone but we usually heal when we are ready and not before. Steve was unique and a true friend and even though a quarter century has passed I miss his chatting away, as he was constantly doing, about anything and everything.
I hope you are well.

may still be there, played fooseball, beat locals. Kept manuals for ordinance - Nike Hercules etc.
there were 3 of us, we discharged out close together, didn't stay in touch much. Spent some time with the wonderful Klar family in Ludwigswinkel, made being in the boonies bearable.
Busch was C/O, Patterson was top kick. discharged Sept '66.. Rarely look back..
My husband, Al Johnson was stationed there from '65-"67 ,I think he was a supply Sargent, his buds were Mike Jones, from upstate N.Y, i think, Raul Cruz ( sp?)from N.Y.C.Ted Tedeschi, from Ma.Al was from Boston,he passed away 10/10/10 and I have many photos from his time there,I also have a handwritten poem ( author unknown) called " A hitch in hell "I think someone stationed with him wrote it.Does any one remember "Big Al" Johnson ?

McCandless and Garlington,

I was at 41st Ord Det for parts of 1986 & 1987. Garlington was 1SG when I got there and Whitaker was Detachment Commander. Then McCandless replaced him. I kept getting shuffled back and forth between Fischbach and Pirmasens 3d Ord Bn (HHC) time in S1, then S2 later. ETS in November 1987, completed college and started a family and career. I think of Fischbach and the gang often.

I have been in touch with O'Kelley, and occasionally Dan Kidd.

I live in Wichita, KS and would look forward to hearing from you guys. I can be reached by e-mail, [email protected]; or [email protected]

Was there during that period. Here are a few more names from the 165th: Paul Freeze, SSG Christianson, SSG Butch Bullock, SFC Teter, Danny Burke, Don Folzenlogel, Palinkas, Sgt. Thompson (Ohio), Harry Hale, Haines (Florida-played basketball in his bare feet), Earl Mitchell, Donnie Arwine, Cpt. Siwicki, Capt. Hawkins, Jim Daley, Durepo (MA), Jimmy Corea, Wildman (Iowa), Terry Law, Pat Hess, SSG Sullivan (Sully), Speedy Gonzalez, Woodburn, Duane Mallory, Jack Devaney, Gary Mundt, Lt. McCaine, etc. Lots of memories but all of these people vanished when I got out in '78. Thirty four years later and I wonder what happened to all of these people.

I was a tower rat back in 76, then went to Bamberg. The first Sgt was a former Cpt. I can't remember his name but I think it started with a "G".
If Danny Gomez is out there I would love to hear from you.
Anyone with pictures; would you please email those pictures.
Please contact me @[email protected]
I was also a tower rat at Fishbach, from about Nov.'75 to Jan. 77. If your name is Norman, it sounds familiar--but I can't place it with a face, good to see some of us are still around

Was at the 165th from '76-'78 and lived in the Quonset hut. Some other names were SFC Underwood, Lt. McShane, Lt. Snyder and who could forget the one and only Meadie Potter.. Reading these emails brings back a lot of great, long ago memories. I am planning on going back for the 1st time next summer. Is it true the Depot is now an animal park?

I was stationed at the 193rd MP Co. in Dahn, and we worked in Fischbach in the Towers, 1965 and 1966. Any one there during those years? I new a guy stationed at Fischbach Jack Diorio from New York, we toured Europe in his VW, running on 3 cylinders, but it was a great trip. Now I can look back on some fond memories and good times in Germany.

Norman Hutchison- The E-7, 1st Sgt. was Gary Gohde. He had been a Captain in Nam but riffed to E-7. Whenever he gave a speech we used to bet on how many F bombs he would drop. He was married to a German and once you got beyond all the bluster he was a great guy with a wonderful family. My favorite story was when he invited us to his house in Fischbach for Thanksgiving dinner. His brother-in-law was a noted German chef and cooked the entire feast.. It was fantastic! The problem started with the consumption of lots of wine and beer. Around 9 o'clock he loaded us into his big Cadillac and drove us back to the Depot. We all had to report for duty on the midnight to noon shift and were extremely intoxicated. There we were around 11:30 p.m. armed to the teeth and ready to guard our nation's secrets and absolutely three sheets to the wind. Sgt. Gohde decides to give a pep talk (F bombs included) while we were in formation and he was off the charts out of it. Great memories and it is hard to believe that 35 years have gone by.
