E. Coli

My son was diagnosed with E. coli about two weeks ago. Since then there has been another young child with a confirmed case and doctors are now worried my son may have been re-exposed. After speaking with several people this week, I have found a few that also have symptoms of E. Coli- abdominal cramps/pain, diarrhea and blood in their stool. This can turn serious in young children as well as the elderly. I am wondering if anyone else has been experiencing these symptoms and if so, have you been to Cole Park recently? The Health Department is aware of what is going on, however, when my son was diagnosed, his was the only case and there wasn't much they could do. Now that there is a second confirmed case and I'm guessing at least two more to come with people I have spoken to, the common ground everyone had... They were at Cole Park. If more people come forward with these symptoms, it may help speed up the process some. It's going to be a hot week coming up and everyone is going to want to go for a swim. PLEASE, if you are having these symptoms, or know of someone who is or did, please urge them to contact the health department. If it is the park, they will have to shut it down till it gets cleaned up so that more people do not get sick. Also so that you are aware, symptoms can occur 1-10 days after exposure and everyone's symptoms can be different. The toxin my son was diagnosed with was Shiga toxin #026 which is not the most common one they were expecting it to be. Be careful out there everyone!

My sympathies go out to you and your son. I caught e-colli the last time I was in the hospital for pneumonia and it's very debilitating. I am 71 years old and made it through and your son can to. Be positive and ask for help from your Higher Power whatever it will be. I wish you both the best.

We were at Cole Park 2 Weeks ago around June 23rd. My daughter got diarrhea a week after and is healthy now. However, my 2 year old son now has been diagnosed with E. Coli after vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal cramping for 6 days. He wasn't eating anything and was finally admitted to the hospital for dehydration and low blood platelets. We got transferred to Upstate Golisano Children's in Syracuse and had to get a blood transfusion since his blood levels are so low and could cause him to loose oxygen. He is now being closely monitored by the Doctors in hopes that his body will respond well the transfusion and his blood levels will increase.

Coincidently, someone I know was in the lake at the same time we were and their son has contracted E.coli as well. The common denominator is Cole park. The Health Department has contacted me and is investigating this further.

I spoke with the health department today and according to them when the water was tested on June 14, there was no E. Coli but on June 24 there was some, however not enough to shut it down, but still enough that you could get sick from it. I think this is asinine- if you can get sick, it should be shut down. Please spread the word and keep people out of that park so more children don't end up sick. Your son is in my thoughts and prayers! I hope he is able to make a full and speedy recovery.
