The Bible’s View

What Sabbath Should You Keep?

AFTER being freed from Egyptian slavery, the Israelites were instructed to keep a weekly Sabbath. That Sabbath fell on the seventh day of the week, beginning at sundown on Friday and ending at sundown on Saturday.

What was the purpose of the law requiring Sabbath observance? Is this the Sabbath that we today should keep?

Sabbath observance was first imposed upon the Israelites in connection with the miraculous provision of manna. On the sixth day, the people were to gather enough manna to last for two days, as none would be made available on the seventh day or the Sabbath.(Ex. 16:22, 23) When the seventh day came, however, some of the people did look for manna, indicating that they were not accustomed to observing a day of rest.(Ex. 16:27)

Therefore, God’s message through Moses was:“How long must you people refuse to keep my commandments and my laws? Mark the fact that Jehovah has given you the sabbath. That is why he is giving you on the sixth day the bread of two days. Keep sitting each one in his own place. Let nobody go out from his locality on the seventh day.”(Ex. 16:28, 29)

In arranging for his people to have a Sabbath, Jehovah God was acting in their interest. It gave all the people, including slaves, and even the domestic animals, a period of needed rest and refreshment. Additionally, the Sabbath was to remind the Israelites of what the Most High had done in liberating them from Egyptian bondage. During that period of oppressive slavery, the people knew no rest.

God’s law stated:“The seventh day is a sabbath to Jehovah your God. You must not do any work, you nor your son nor your daughter nor your slave man nor your slave girl nor your bull nor your ass nor any domestic animal of yours nor your alien resident who is inside your gates, in order that your slave man and your slave girl may rest the same as you. And you must remember that you became a slave in the land of Egypt and Jehovah your God proceeded to bring you out from there with a strong hand and an outstretched arm. That is why Jehovah your God commanded you to carry on the sabbath day.”(Deut. 5:14, 15)

Since Sabbath observance was to serve as a reminder of what Jehovah God had done in freeing the Israelites from Egypt, it is clear that the law about keeping a Sabbath did not exist earlier; nor had it been given to any other people.

This is further confirmed at Exodus 31:16, 17, where we read:“The sons of Israel must keep the sabbath, so as to carry out the sabbath during their generations. It is a covenant to time indefinite. Between me and the sons of Israel it is a sign to time indefinite, because in six days Jehovah made the heavens and the earth and on the seventh day he rested and proceeded to refresh himself.”

So, in the case of the Israelites, Sabbath observance was a visible sign or proof of the covenant relationship that they enjoyed with their God. Surely, if other peoples had been keeping such a day of rest, the Sabbath could not have served as a distinguishing sign.

What about today? Does Jehovah God require his servants to set aside one day a week specially for him?

Note what the apostle Paul wrote about observing days:“One man judges one day as above another; another man judges one day as all others; let each man be fully convinced in his own mind. He who observes the day observes it to Jehovah.”(Rom. 14:5, 6) These words show that in the first century C.E. Christians were under no obligation to keep any day as a Sabbath.

The important thing for Christians was their doing of God’s will daily.

The Mosaic law, with its Sabbath requirements, was fulfilled in Jesus Christ.

It had never been binding on non-Jews and so was not imposed on persons who accepted Christianity.

Hence, Christians were not to let others condemn them, to make them feel that they were sinning, on the basis of their not keeping certain days. To fellow believers at Colossae, the apostle Paul wrote:“Let no man judge you in eating and drinking or in respect of a festival or of an observance of the new moon or of a sabbath; for those things are a shadow of the things to come, but the reality belongs to the Christ.”(Col. 2:16, 17)

Moreover, the apostle Paul warned the Galatian Christians against professed Christians who were trying to bring them back under the Mosaic law in various respects. He said:“How is it that you are turning back again to the weak and beggarly elementary things and want to slave for them over again? You are scrupulously observing days and months and seasons and years. I fear for you, that somehow I have toiled to no purpose respecting you.”(Gal. 4:9-11)

To the Christianized Hebrews, Paul also wrote:“We who have exercised faith [in the Christ provided by God] do enter into the rest, just as he [God] has said.”(Heb. 4:3)

In view of this, what does Jehovah God want his people to do today? As in the case of the Israelites who were commanded to keep a weekly Sabbath law, that which pleases the Most High is the doing of all things to his honor and not the mere formalistic observance of a day of rest.(1 Cor. 10:31)

Hence, we should strive to use each day in a way that will bring praise to Jehovah God.
Therefore, according to the testimony of Scripture, ONLY THE ISRAELITES WERE COMMANDED TO KEEP THE SEVENT DAY AS A SABBATH.

This Sabbath observance served as a sign of the covenant between Israel and Jehovah God.

With Jesus Christ’s fulfilling the Law, Sabbath keeping was not imposed anew on his followers.(Rom. 7:4-6)

However, by refraining from making selfish pursuits the focal point of their lives, Christians demonstrate that they recognize the importance of using their time to honor the Creator. Each day they should strive to follow God’s way, proving that they are finding pleasure in him.

The minding of the flesh means death, but the minding of the spirit means life and peace.—Rom. 8:6.
How can we pursue “the minding of the spirit”? By regularly setting our minds on the things of the spirit and allowing a spiritual inclination and attitude to develop in us. As we do this, we have a mind-set that is “under subjection to the law of God” and is “in harmony with” his thoughts.(Rom. 8:7, 8) When we are faced with a temptation, we will be moved to make the correct choice—one that is in accord with the spirit. Therefore, it is vital to set our minds on the things of the spirit. We do this by ‘bracing up our minds for activity,’ building our life around a spiritual routine that includes regular prayer, Bible reading and study, meeting attendance, and the Christian ministry.(1 Pet. 1:13) Rather than allowing the things of the flesh to distract us, let us set our minds on the things of the spirit. Doing so will bring us blessings, for the minding of the spirit means life and peace.—Gal. 6:7, 8.

The hate filled death cult member again tries distorting scripture to the benefit of his handlers.

Whether you realize it or not this system of things is molding or fashioning you to suit its selfish purposes. To be transformed means getting a whole new outlook on life, and you can do this by getting God’s thoughts that are recorded in the Bible for your benefit.
‘Let us eat, drink and be merry, without any serious thought about the past or the future,’ seems to have been the policy of those people before the Flood.
Is it any different today? Look around your own circle of acquaintances and observe for yourself. The desires of the flesh are uppermost in mind. One night’s empty, effervescent hilarity is not concluded before the question is arising, What shall we do tomorrow night? There is the never-ending quest for thrills and “kicks.”
Popularity with the crowd is the main objective. Everyone seems to be busy trying to prove he is as good as everyone else. Rebellion against parental authority leads to other types of lawlessness.
Statistics point to a continuing increase in juvenile crime. Complete disregard for the rights, the happiness, the well-being of others characterizes the attitude of today’s youth.
Add to the foregoing the loose and immoral conduct that is prevalent in teen-age circles. The many passion-arousing practices of worldly youth such as heavy petting, overfamiliarity between persons of opposite sex, inordinate drinking, wearing of clothing that is admittedly designed to excite, the abuse of sex functions whose uses are limited by God’s law to married persons—all these things mark this generation as one that has its mind on flesh and on material things, with no time for sober thought on such questions as, Why were we given life in the first place? and what is to be our destiny?
If you are in harmony with or sympathetic toward any of these unclean practices, then you should take note of the following very plain words:“For those who are in accord with the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh ... For the minding of the flesh means death, but the minding of the spirit means life and peace; because the minding of the flesh means enmity with God, for it is not under subjection to the law of God, nor, in fact, can it be. So those who are in harmony with the flesh cannot please God.”(Rom. 8:5-8)
So if you love life, then the sensible thing to do is to heed the urgent counsel of the Bible to “flee from the desires incidental to youth” and seek the way of God’s favor and survival at this world’s approaching end.—2 Tim. 2:22.
This whole world is geared to cater to the “desire of the eyes,” and especially to the eyes of youth. Every weapon of its advertising arsenal is used to bombard the mind of youth, your mind, with its cheap, blatant, often dishonest come-on techniques. Doubtless you have often reproved baby brother or sister for her endless cry “I want that, I want that,” as each new bauble comes to view. But are teen-agers any better?
It is true they want more expensive baubles such as automobiles, lots of clothing in the most up-to-date mode, the latest in hi-fi; in fact, all kinds of gadgets the possession of which makes them no happier. But they are still suffering from a childish mania for possessing everything they see.
If life in a new system of things is really what you want, then you will have to learn to say No to the “desire of the eyes.”
And this does not mean closing your eyes so that you will not be able to see this world’s gaudy window display. Jesus warns:“Keep your eyes open and guard against every sort of covetousness, because even when a person has an abundance his life does not result from the things he possesses.” And again:“What benefit will it be to a man if he gains the whole world but forfeits his soul?”—Luke 12:15; Matt. 16:26.

Brainwashing 101.

"I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel."
Only a remnant of the Israelites accepted Jesus as Messiah and were saved.

Ro 9:27- Moreover, Isaiah cries out concerning Israel:“Although the number of the sons of Israel may be as the sand of the sea, it is the remnant that will be saved.

Ro 11:7 - What, then? The very thing Israel is earnestly seeking he did not obtain, but the ones chosen obtained it. The rest had their sensibilities blunted;

These were the ones that joyfully hailed him as the “King of Israel.”

Joh 1:49 - Nathanael answered him:“Rabbi, you are the Son of God, you are King of Israel.

Joh 12:12, 13- The next day the great crowd that had come to the festival, on hearing that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 13 took the branches of palm trees and went out to meet him. And they began to shout:“Save, we pray you! Blessed is he that comes in Jehovah’s name, even the king of Israel!”

The majority of the Israelites, refused to put faith in Jesus

They joined their religious leaders in crying out:“Take him away! Take him away! Impale him!”“We have no king but Caesar.”

Joh 19:15- However, they shouted:“Take [him] away! Take [him] away! Impale him!” Pilate said to them:“Shall I impale YOUR king?” The chief priests answered:“We have no king but Caesar.”

Mr 15:11-15- But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release Barabbas to them, instead. 12 Again in reply Pilate was saying to them:“What, then, shall I do with him whom YOU call the king of the Jews?” 13 Once more they cried out:“Impale him!” 14 But Pilate went on to say to them:“Why, what bad thing did he do?” Still they cried out all the more:“Impale him!” 15 At that Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas to them, and, after having Jesus whipped, he handed him over to be impaled.

This is also a blasphemous lie. You will just believe any crap the Watchtower cult feeds you. Jesus was not impaled nor did anyone demand he be impaled. He was crucified. The JW confusion comes from the literal translation of Stauros or Xylon. While there is no clear evidence that the words are better translated "cross" than stake or wood (respectively) Jesus was clearly crucified (nailed to it) and not impaled (i.e. had the stake run through his body).

This is a simple error that a little research should clear up for you.

"The American Heritage Dictionary says... im·pale; 1.a. To pierce with a sharp stake or point. b. To torture or kill by impaling. 2. To render helpless as if by impaling. Webster's Online Dictionary says,“a : to pierce with or as if with something pointed; especially : to torture or kill by fixing on a sharp stake b: to fix in an inescapable or helpless position.”

Jesus, however was nailed to the wood (crucified in simpler terms).

It takes courage to break away from an entrenched religious tradition originating in the mists of pagan antiquity.

A good example of such a break is in the New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures, which renders staurós as “torture stake” and the verb stauróo as “impale,” not “crucify.”

This frees from all taint of paganism the precious sacrifice that our Lord and Savior made.

W. E. Vine says on this subject:

CROSS:
"STAUROS (staur¬V) denotes, primarily, an upright pale or stake. On such malefactors were nailed for execution. Both the noun and the verb stauroo, to fasten to a stake or pale, are originally to be distinguished from the ecclesiastical form of a two beamed cross." Greek scholar Vine then mentions the Chaldean origin of the two-piece cross and how it was adopted from the pagans by Christendom in the third century C.E. as a symbol of Christ's impalement.

—Vine's Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words, 1981, Vol. 1, p. 256.

The Latin dictionary by Lewis and Short gives as the basic meaning of crux:

"a tree, frame, or other wooden instruments of execution, on which criminals were impaled or hanged."

The book Dual Heritage—The Bible and the British Museum states:

"It may come as a shock to know that there is no word such as 'cross' in the Greek of the New Testament. The word translated 'cross' is always the Greek word [stau·ros'] meaning a 'stake' or 'upright pale.' The cross was not originally a Christian symbol; it is derived from Egypt and Constantine."

The End of False Religion Is Near!

▪ What is false religion?

▪ How will it end?

▪ How will you be affected?

What Is False Religion?

Are you distressed about crimes committed in the name of religion? Do the warfare, terrorism, and corruption perpetrated by those who claim to serve God offend your sense of justice? Why does religion seem to be at the root of so many problems?

The fault lies, not with all religion, but with false religion. A widely respected religious figure, Jesus Christ, indicated that false religion produces bad works, just as a “rotten tree produces worthless fruit.”(Matthew 7:15-17) What fruit does false religion yield?

False Religion ...

▪ MEDDLES IN WAR AND POLITICS:“Across Asia and beyond,” says the journal Asiaweek,“power-hungry leaders are cynically manipulating people’s religious sentiments for their own needs.” As a result, the journal warns:“The world threatens to sink into madness.” A prominent religious leader in the United States declared:“You’ve got to kill the terrorists before the killing stops.” His solution?“Blow them all away in the name of the Lord.” By contrast, the Bible says:“If anyone makes the statement:‘I love God,’ and yet is hating his brother, he is a liar.”(1 John 4:20) Jesus even said:“Continue to love your enemies.”(Matthew 5:44) How many religions can you think of whose members engage in war?

▪ SPREADS FALSE DOCTRINE: Most religions teach that the soul or spirit is some invisible part of a human that survives the death of the physical body. By means of this teaching, many of these religions exploit their members, charging money to pray for departed souls. However, the Bible teaches a different doctrine.“The soul that is sinning—it itself will die.”(Ezekiel 18:4)“The living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all.”(Ecclesiastes 9:5) Jesus taught that the dead will be resurrected—an unnecessary action if humans had an immortal soul.(John 11:11-25) Does your religion teach that the soul does not die?

▪ TOLERATES IMMORAL SEX: In Western lands, church groups ordain gay and lesbian members of the clergy and urge governments to recognize same-sex marriages. Even churches that condemn immorality have tolerated religious leaders who have sexually abused children. What, though, does the Bible teach? It plainly states:“Do not be misled. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men kept for unnatural purposes, nor men who lie with men ... will inherit God’s kingdom.”(1 Corinthians 6:9, 10) Do you know of religions that condone immoral sex?
What does the future hold for religions that produce rotten fruit? Jesus warned:“Every tree not producing fine fruit gets cut down and thrown into the fire.”(Matthew 7:19) Yes, false religion will be chopped down and destroyed! But how and when will this happen? A prophetic vision recorded in the Bible book of Revelation, chapters 17 and 18, provides the answer.

How Will False Religion End?

Picture the scene. A harlot is sitting on the back of a fearsome beast. The beast has seven heads and ten horns.(Revelation 17:1-4) Whom does the harlot represent? She exerts influence “over the kings of the earth.” She dresses in purple, uses incense, and is exceedingly wealthy. In addition, by means of her spiritistic practice,‘all the nations are misled.’(Revelation 17:18; 18:12, 13, 23) The Bible helps us to see that this harlot is a worldwide religious entity. She depicts, not any one religion, but all religions that produce rotten fruit.

The beast that the harlot rides pictures the world’s political powers.(Revelation 17:10-13) False religion straddles the back of this political beast, attempting to influence its decisions and to control its direction.
Soon, though, an amazing event will take place.“The ten horns that you saw, and the wild beast, these will hate the harlot and will make her devastated and naked, and will eat up her fleshy parts and will completely burn her with fire.”(Revelation 17:16) In a sudden, shocking move, the world’s political powers will turn on false religion and completely destroy her! What will prompt this action? The Bible book of Revelation answers:“God put it into their hearts to carry out his thought.”(Revelation 17:17) Yes, God will call false religion to account for all the despicable acts she has committed in his name. In a stroke of perfect justice, he will use her political paramours as his instrument of execution.
What must you do if you do not want to share the fate of false religion?“Get out of her, my people,” urges God’s messenger.(Revelation 18:4) Indeed, now is the time to flee from false religion! But to where can you flee? Not into atheism, since its future is also bleak.(2 Thessalonians 1:6-9) The only haven is within true religion. How can you identify true religion?

How to Identify True Religion

What good fruit should true religion produce?—Matthew 7:17.

True Religion ...

PRACTICES LOVE: True worshippers are “no part of the world,” are not divided by race or culture, and display ‘love among themselves.’(John 13:35; 17:16; Acts 10:34, 35) Rather than killing one another, they are willing to die for one another.—1 John 3:16.

TRUSTS GOD’S WORD: Instead of teaching “tradition” and “commands of men as doctrines,” true religion bases its doctrine on God’s Word, the Bible.(Matthew 15:6-9) Why? Because “all Scripture is inspired of God and beneficial for teaching, for reproving, for setting things straight.”—2 Timothy 3:16.

STRENGTHENS FAMILIES AND UPHOLDS HIGH MORAL STANDARDS: True religion trains husbands to ‘love their wives as their own bodies,’ helps wives to develop ‘deep respect for their husbands,’ and teaches children to ‘be obedient to their parents.’(Ephesians 5:28, 33; 6:1) In addition, those entrusted with positions of authority must have exemplary morals.—1 Timothy 3:1-10.
Does any religion meet these standards? The book Holocaust Politics, published in 2001, says:“If more people practiced versions of what the Jehovah’s Witnesses preach and practice, the Holocaust could have been prevented and genocide would scourge the world no more.”

Indeed, in 235 lands, Jehovah’s Witnesses do not just preach the Bible’s moral standards—they live by them. We urge you to ask Jehovah’s Witnesses to help you learn what God requires of you so that you can worship him acceptably. Now is the time to act. Do not delay. The end of false religion is near!—Zephaniah 2:2, 3.
