The Question "why is prostitution illegal?"

Crashing in the backyard with the family the other day, our youngest girl asked me that question; dad, why is prostitution illegal? She didn't ask why it was wrong, or why you shouldn't do it, but specifically quiet was against the law. And I didn't have an immediate good answer for her! So naturally a family discussion ensued, and we finally decided that 'charging people money to have sex with your body' is illegal, because society has decided it's immoral, and wrong. That is as opposed to a more absolute definition of "immoral and wrong" such as would be murder, and to a lesser degree lying, cheating, and stealing, etc. We decided that if a person is going to have sex with another person, the fact as to whether money did or did not change hands for that, is really immaterial. I mean so far as the act itself goes. Nothing has changed, other than a societal perception of charging for sex being wrong. It was quite an eye-opener to get a question like that from somebody her age, and even more so to learn that the reason she asked me the question in the first place was that she and her friends had been discussing it during lunch, at her [middle] school. Kids sure bandy about ideas which we never did at their age! So the question remains: just exactly why is prostitution illegal? Since it's really only sex and presumably between consenting adults, why does society think it's wrong and why is it any of society's business what people do?

Agree with you when you sort of answered your own question; it's illegal because "society" has decided that it's bad. It's just like a lot of other things, it's really not wrong but due to popular opinion, the sheep following what they've always been told, while they think it's bad so laws are passed against it. It's interesting [or you could use other words] that the majority of things which society deems wrong, are related to sexuality, sex and nudity. People get more upset about that than they do serious crimes that actually hurt people.

There's laws against incest also, but he11, there's immoral people everywhere, maybe if prostitution was legal, wouldn't be so many incestious people in the world,(hint) nasty @$$ people!
