After 45 years of 16-hour work days, an Israeli scholar has finally completed his life's work - a translation of the entire Talmud, one of Judaism's most important texts, to make it accessible to ordinary people.

Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz began his translation and commentary on the Talmud in 1965. This week he is publishing the last book of his 46-volume series.

Steinsaltz has written some 60 books on subjects like zoology and theology, but his translation of the Talmud from Aramaic to Hebrew, adding his own comments, marks his crowning achievement.

The Rabbis edited the Talmud frequently....
.
Raphael Rabbinovicz,(Ma'amar al hadpasath ha-talmud — Munich, 1877), a critical review of the editions of the Babylonian Talmud, as a whole or in part since 1484. The first complete edition appeared at Venice (Bomberg),(12 vols., 1520-23).
.
The advantage of this edition consists in its complete character; the text itself is full of errors. A certain reputation is enjoyed by the Amsterdam edition (1644-48), in which the censured passages have been as far as possible restored.
.
The edition of Frankfort (1720-22) served directly or indirectly as a basis for those which followed. Of the later editions may be mentioned those of Berlin (1862-68), Vienna (1864-72), and Vilna (1880-86).
.
A quarto edition, the text after the editio princeps, with the variants of the Munich manuscripts and a German translation, was begun by Lazarus Goldschmidt in 1897. Up to date 6 vols., containing the Institutes I, II, IV, V, and the two first treatises of III have appeared.
.
Unfortunately this publication is by no means faultless. M.L. Rodkinson, "New Edition of the Babylonian Talmud", New York, 1896; M. Mielziner, "Introduction to the Talmud" (Cincinnati, 1894; New York, 1903); M.L. Rodkinson, "The History of the Talmud" (New York, 1903); H.L. Strack, "Einleitung in den Talmud" (Leipzig 1908), pp. 139-175, containing an extensive bibliography of the Talmud and of the questions concerning it.
.
The Babylonian Talmud was compiled up to the 6th century. Some scholars suggest that the organization of the Talmud began early and that successive generations of amoraim added layer upon layer to previously arranged material. Others suggest that at the beginning a stratum called Gemara, consisting only of Halakhic decisions or short comments, was set forth. Still others theorize that no overall arrangement of Talmudic material was made until the end of the 4th century.
.
The Tosefta (“Addition”) closely resembles the Mishna in content and order. In its present form it at times supplements the Mishna, at other times comments on it, and often also opposes it. There is no Tosefta on the tractates Avot, Tamid, Middot, and Qinnim.
.
The Talmud quotes from many other collections of Mishnaiot and Baraitot: some are attributed to tannaim, and predate the established Mishna; and others, to amoraim. The original material is lost.

.
Nineteenth century and after
The Vilna edition of the Talmud was subject to Russian government censorship, or self-censorship to meet government expectations, though this was less severe than some previous attempts: the title "Talmud" was retained and the tractate Avodah Zarah was included. Most modern editions are either copies of or closely based on the Vilna edition, and therefore still omit most of the disputed passages.

This commentary on Deuteronomy by the exiled Portuguese statesman Isaac Abravanel was the first Hebrew book printed in Sabbioneta. A number of passages found offensive to Christianity were blotted out by the Church censor, who closed the Foŕ press eight years later.

One of the rarest Hebrew books in the world, this single leaf was believed until recently to be the only remaining fragment of this book in existence. From the first Spanish edition of the major post-Maimonidean legal code, this page contains the concluding section of the laws pertaining to the mezuzah. The type face is based on Sephardic cursive script, common in early Hebrew printing.

One of the last books issued by the famed Soncino family of printers in their hometown near Cremona, this is the first edition of tractate Nidah of the Babylonian Talmud, dealing with the ritual laws concerning menstruation and childbirth. The ancient talmudic text in Aramaic figures in the centre of the page, surrounded by the medieval commentaries of Rashi and the Tosafot.

The old Talmuds that didn't get burned through out Europe, still hold the old quotes. The modern day Talmuds have been edited and those quotes were removed for obvious reasons.
.
There are five contemporary translations of the Talmud into English:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talmud#Translati...
.
The Jerusalem Talmud
The Jerusalem Talmud predates its counterpart, the Babylonian Talmud, by about 200 years and is written in both Hebrew and Jewish Palestinian Aramaic. It includes the core component, the Mishna, finalized by Rabbi Judah the Prince (c. 200 CE) along with the written discussions of generations of rabbis in the Land of Israel (primarily in the academies of Tiberias and Caesarea) which was compiled c. 350-400 CE into a series of books that became the Gemara
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerusalem_Talmud
.
1830 by Ede Weisz, Jozsef Adler, Grusky, and Jonas Ritter. In 1869 they built a synagogue
The community became a registration center for the surrounding villages, and was headed by Asher Kain, who fulfilled the role of rabbi. In 1899, Rabbi Mozes Friedlander was chosen as the Chief Rabbi, followed by Rabbi Zalman Friedman, who wrote a new interpretation of the Talmud
http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/Transylvania/...
.
Some scholars hold that there has been extensive editorial reshaping of the stories and statements within the Talmud. Lacking outside confirming texts, they hold that we cannot confirm the origin or date of most statements and laws, and that we can say little for certain about their authorship. In this view, the questions above are impossible to answer. See, for example, the works of Louis Jacobs and Shaye J.D. Cohen.
.
Some scholars hold that many or most the statements and events described in the Talmud usually occurred more or less as described, and that they can be used as serious sources of historical study. In this view, historians do their best to tease out later editorial additions and skeptically view accounts of miracles, leaving behind a reliable historical text. See, for example, the works of Saul Lieberman, David Weiss Halivni, and Avraham Goldberg.

The bible, the koran, the talmud, the torah, the book of mormon, the urantia book, in short all religious books cannot be taken any more seriously than Harry Potter or Romancing The Stone. They were all written by humans. Humans tell stories and fabricate things to make sense of the world around them. Jews are no exception.

On 3 year old brides?.
.
"When a grown up man has intercourse with a little girl it is nothing, for when the girl is less than this — that is, less than three years old — it is as if one puts the finger into the eye — tears come to the eye again and again, so does virginity come back to the little girl under three years." (See Exhibit 136, Kethuboth 11b of the Talmud)
.
The following is also typical concerning the age of sexual maturity of baby girls set by the Pharisee "sages:" "A maiden aged three years and one day may be acquired in marriage by coition …" See Exhibit 55 (Sanhedrin 55b), Exhibit 81 (Sanhedrin 69a-69b), Exhibit 156 (Yebamoth 57b), and Exhibit 159 (Yebamoth 60b); also Niddah 44b.
.
Baby girls of three can invoke sadistic punishments on those who have intercourse with them when they are "Niddahs" (menstruating), a physical impossibility, of course.(Talmud, Sanhedrin 55b - Exhibit 55; Sanhedrin 69a - Exhibit 81)
.
And, at three, a baby girl is always rated as "one who is fit for cohabitation — that is one who has attained the age of three years and one day." (Talmud, Yebamoth 60b, Exhibit 159) But, in the case of a baby girl who is not Jewish-born, or a so-called "proselyte," she may be "married" thus by a grown priest: "A proselyte who is under the age of three years and one day is permitted to marry a priest;" although "one who is fit for cohabitation," as stated on the same page, is "one who has attained the age of three years and one day." (See Exhibit 159)
.
This Talmud Yebamoth passage continues with the ruling in the case of a baby under three married to a grown man priest, and declared eligible to continue as his wife.(See Exhibit 160) The baby girl was a "proselyte," of course, so age did not matter. But "under eleven years and one day" a little girl "carries on her marital intercourse in the usual manner." (See Exhibit 152, Yebamoth 12b of the Talmud)
.
"Rabbi Joseph said,'Come and hear. A maiden aged 3 years and a day may be acquired in marriage by coition.' Mishnah: A girl of the age of 3 years and a day may be betrothed, subject to her father's approval, by sexual intercourse....Gemara: Our Rabbis taught:'A girl of the age of 3 years may be betrothed by sexual intercourse.' "
.
Child marriage was possible in Judaism, due to the very low marriageable age for females. A ketannah (literally meaning little [one]) was any girl between the age of 3 years and that of 12 years plus one day; a ketannah was completely subject to her father's authority, and her father could arrange a marriage for her, whether she agreed to it or not.

Selected and gathered by a pure and holy soul, one of the leading Rabbis and Torah scholars of Aram-Zova (Haleb) of the previous generations, Maharan Harav
Shmuel Laniado z"al from his holy writings, and printed in the year 1923
.
http://www.hebrewbooks.org/pdfpager.aspx...
.
It should be made clear to all that the Sephardi community itself is composed of various sub-communities, classified according to their land of origin. Each group in turn has it's individual customs.
.
In his preface, the author utters the prayer that, as he merited producing a Kitzur on the Orach Chaim section of the Shulchan Aruch, so may Hashem grant him the means and strength to produce one on each of the other three sections as well. We do not know if he ever wrote a Kitzur for the other sections or not, for this sefer itself was hidden in manuscript form the year 1804 until it was discovered
in 1923 by Rabbi Ezra Lupaz zt"l, who then decided to publish it The manuscript was in the possession of HaRav Yitzchak Ladiano
.
His father Rabbi Nissim, mentioned in at the end of the Shulchan HaMalach, was one of the outstanding Rabbis of Aram-Zova. He lost his sight at the age of 26, but nevertheless continued his studies
of the Talmud and Halacha. Rabbi Shaul Davik, in his eulogy of Rabbi Nissim, said of him, "He was a man who knew all, Scriptures, Mishnah, Talmud, and Kabbalah". Legend has it that he was versed
in the six orders of the Mishnah along with their commentaries, and was thoroughly familiar with the Talmud, Rashi and Tosefot..
.
334 Chapter Seventy-Two
The testimony of a person who converts to Judaism is invalid if he witnessed an event relating to forbidden foods when he was a gentile, since at the time he was a gentile, and a gentile is not
believed in these matters,(ibid. 79)

Shulchan Aruch...
Shulhan Arukh), known in English as the Code of Jewish Law, is a codification, or written manual, of halacha (Jewish law), authored and published by Rabbi Yosef Karo in the 16th century. Together with its commentaries, it is generally considered the most widely accepted and authoritative compilation of halacha since the Mishneh Torah or even the Talmud itself.
.
The halachic rulings in the Shulchan Aruch generally follow Sephardic law and customs whereas Ashkenazi Jews will generally follow the halachic rulings of Moshe Isserlis (known as the Rema)
.

.
Later collations

In the late 18th century, there were several attempts to recompile the major halakhic opinions into a simpler, more accessible form.

Scripture
The Tanakh and the Talmud are the main holy books in Judaism. The Tanakh contains the Torah (five books of Moses), the Nevi'im ("prophets"), and the Ketuvim ("writings"). Judaism's oral law is contained in the Mishnah, Tosefta, classical midrashim, and the two Talmuds.
