Is your church a cult?

"What do the Jehovah's Witnesses, Mormons, Catholics, and the Church of Christ denomination all have in common? They each claim to have THE Way; THE Truth; and THE Life, and that no one gets to heaven without being a part of their organization! Certainly they can't all be right since their individual doctrinal beliefs are diametrically opposed to one another........"
Are They A Cult?
Years ago the Lord gave us (FQM) an acronym for cults:
C. Claim to be The Only True Christians
U. Unorthodox Extra-biblical Revelation
L. Lying Leaders (History/Doctrine)
T. THE Way (Salvation is found only in their organization)
S. Salvation By Works (obedience to ordinances such as baptism)
As you can see the only area that the ________ denomination doesn't qualify for the title is that they don't have any unorthodox extra-biblical revelation that they would put on par with God's Word. But, they do:
1. Claim to be the Only True Christians
2. Lie about their history,
Pay close attention to how they combine verses to make their point. To “prove” their point the _______ has to take you from one verse to another and try to get you to agree with their conclusions. The danger is adding 2 plus 2 and coming up with 3. There is a verse in the Bible that says,“Judas went and hanged himself.” There is another verse, somewhere else, that says,“Go, and do likewise.” So we are all supposed to commit suicide, right? Beware of mixing two verses together to come to your “conclusions” when there are already clear verses about the subject. We will refer to this tactic as “Convolution.” To “convolute” means to “twist.” A pretzel is convoluted. Likewise, scriptural Convolution, is twisting a verse or two into a pretzel.
This tactic is self-explanatory. They simply omit verses that contradict their position.
This tactic is occasionally used when we see an example of the Holy Spirit’s activity in the church that contradicts the _________ position. They say that it is an “exception rather than the rule.” In other words, that verse or incident “doesn’t count.” Keep in mind, the _________ claims to “Speak where the Bible speaks and we are silent where the Bible is silent.”
Eisegesis is the opposite of Exegesis. To exegete a text is to draw the true meaning out. To eisegete a text is to read your personal interpretation or preconceive ideas into the verse.
This is not so much an “error” as it is a “tactic.” Note the exaggerated use of the exclamation point! This is a tactic used to make the reader feel stupid like the subjects in the “Emperor’s New Clothes.” There it is! Don’t you get it? It is so clear! Anyone can see that this is correct!

Definition of a Christian cult would be one that 1) claims to be Christian 2) uses other books. That's it. They are not actual Christian if they are in other books.
Beyond that we need to be careful labeling fellow Christians as 'cults' just because we may disagree with their doctrines even if they are wrong since the Pope is the one who does this. The Pope calls all of Protestantism sectarian heretics and cults. The Vatican was behind the Cult Awareness Network. They would go after various groups, and publish books that list all these supposed cults. The Catholic Church was always missing from the list.
Baptism is Biblical. We are told Christ's resurrection is remembered thru baptism, not Sunday observance (Ro6:4-6). The Sabbath was never changed to Sunday.
Works has more than one meaning. We are told faith without works is dead, and that we will be judged by our works. However other passages tell us works were done away with. This has to do with the two different laws: God's 10C law, and the Law of Moses or sacrificial system. There is no more sacrificial system after Jesus who was the final sacrifice upon the cross. Today Christians still observe God's law with the faith of Jesus, not any sacrificial system. The sacrificial system was works to atone for sin.
This forum with all its sex chat and spam is not the best place to try and offer Bible to those who are not ready to receive. There are other Christian sections of topix but this section could be deleted and burned and it would be no loss. There is nothing to see here.

I tend to agree about Christmas. It is entirely a Catholic tradition that was not observed in most states just before the Civil War. The first commandment tells us not to follow other gods.

3 For the practices of the peoples are worthless;
they cut a tree out of the forest,
and a craftsman shapes it with his chisel.
4 They adorn it with silver and gold;
they fasten it with hammer and nails
so it will not totter.

I always think of a "cult" as being a group or sect which sets itself apart from society, a closed community with its own "laws" which doesn't recognize society and the rule of law. Borderline would be examples such as the Amish. But definite examples are Jonestown and what happened at Ruby Ridge, and such groups where some charismatic individual will suck people in by telling them that he is "the Messiah" and they buy acreage, put up buildings, and form a compound/commune. Then they have the issue of forcing really young girls into marriage, or just being forced to give themselves to the leader for his sexual pleasure – things like that. I think the word 'cult' is thrown around to freely these days. You have to be careful of your definition before you start putting some(religious) group into that category.
