People can follow the beliefs of atheism blindly and, instead of thinking for themselves, become brainwashed accepting the atheistic world view without ever questioning or open mindedly considering the alternatives. The majority of those who reject the existence of God do so purely on an emotional basis. A prayer unanswered as expected, or the death of a loved one, are usually the reasons that the average human being rejects God. It is bitterness at loss, and inability to cope with that loss. Afterwards, such a person looks for justification to maintain such a worldview, such as latching onto science, or philosophy, or naturalism. Over a period of time, the bitterness remains in control of the emotions while the atheist (or anti-theist) basically convinces him or herself that they are being logical, or spend time seeking validation of what they already presuppose.

A classic example of this happened in the life of the late Christopher Hitchens. His mother and her lover (a former Anglican priest) committed suicide together. This left a terrible emotional hole in the psyche of Mr. Hitchens that was never healed. Christopher Hitchens blamed this tragic loss on his mother's boyfriend. The basic reasoning of Hitchens was that his mother's "killer" was also dead, and Hitchens had no way to obtain justice through retribution.
