Is it possible for a locksmith to cut a key for the lock?

Yes, if the locksmith has a blank.
How old is the lock?
The older the lock the less likely there's a blank available. You may have to call around to find one.

It is technically possible, but it's going to be MUCH cheaper and better in the long run to just replace the lock. If it's a padlock or something, cut it off. If it's in a door, drill it out. Then just remove the guts, and install a new lock.
