For what purpose did Jesus die? And what is the main message of Jesus? Is it to love thy neighbor as thy self? Did he die for our sins? Did he die so that Christianity would be formed? Or did he die so that human beings would worship him?

I don't think he died for a purpose. There are reasons why events took their course, but not a purpose. Why does there HAVE to be a purpose ?

The purpose of his life ( his mission ) was clear, though. He was trying to teach ( show ) people to be fully human, by being fully human ...

If he existed, it appears that he died as a penalty for his crimes against the Roman empire.

The Romans didn't take kindly to sedition.

They crucified people for that, so I hear.

Whether Jesus existed is NOT at stake here. If he did not, there would be no thread. How, or why he died is not really at stake either ...

The question revolves around the "purpose" of his death. You did not comment on that ...

They will tell you that "Jesus died to save us, since we are all sinners. His death meant that we would be rewarded eternal life if we believe in him. "

???

Besides an extremely insulting, confusing, debatable and weird notion, I also have this to say...

Jesus was not the only being created by man who was believed to have done this.

Osiris also did this.
"--He was the Resurrection and the Life, the Good Shepherd, Eternity and Everlastingness, the god who “made men and women to be born again.”--From first to last, Osiris was to the Egyptians the god-man who suffered, an died, and rose again, and reigned eternally in heaven. They believed that they would inherit eternal life, just as he had done ."

That comes from this page:

Interesting list of gods. Check it out. Notice the similarities.

Here's my opinion:
If there was a man named Jesus living in that part of the world at that time (many men had the name, Jesus in that part of the world at that time) who claimed to be a prophet (many men living in that part of the world at that time claimed to be prophets) and was crucified, he probably met that fate because he upset a bunch of the wrong people.

What more does one have to read into that ?

Nothing new about it. We still get that sort of thing these days. Only difference is that crucifixion seems to have lost much of its public appeal as a means to kill someone. Beheading, drugs, gas, bullets (and perhaps a few others) are now the murder methods of choice.

The question is actually absurd and it does not even deserve responding to.

If you ask me why the wild birds eat the seed in my bird feeder, that is a question that I can easily respond to. I will quickly answer that it's most likely because they sense hunger. They require the energy derived from the digested seed in order for them to continue their life and ultimately procreating to continue their species.

Just because there is a thread that mentions his name and assumes he existed, that is not proof he existed.

Like this one for example;

So then, according to you, Santa exists?

If you denied the existence of Jesus, that would be the end of your input, wouldn't it ? You don't even have to prove his non-existence. You only have to deny it, & decline to comment ...

But you didn't do that, did you ?

You are avoiding the issue, by side-tracking to Santa ( incidentally, he doesn't deliver to apes )...

If you accept the existence of Jesus as a fact, you can proceed to comment on the purpose of his death. You don't have to "prove"
his existence, you can just proceed to state your opinion ...

Even if you doubt the existence of Jesus, you may state your position, hypothetically accept his existence, & proceed to state your provisional opinion ...

If the Romans crucified Jesus, the purpose of his death was to get rid of a troublemaker and to set an example for other troublemakers.

Your guess is as good as anyone's.
baracata wrote:

Probably not.

That would be a complete fiction.
baracata wrote:

If Jesus was a historical person, he was a Jew, not a Christian.

Question for you:
When you were in school, did they teach you how to believe or did they teach you how to think ?
