Prof Shettar’s findings that Kannada language had evolved an independent script much before Tamil and Kannada poets were part of much acclaimed Sangam poets’ conglomeration provides strong justification for the demand for classical language status for Kannada.
Tamil scholars argue that Sangam age existed between 5th century BC and 5th century AD. Sangam was a conglomeration of poets in which Tiruvalluvar and others were important. Sangam poets were secular in their outlook and opposed conservative practices which made them icons of Dravidian and Tamil nationalist movement.
According to Prof S Shettar, Sangam age was more cosmopolitan by nature as poets from neighbouring Dravidian languages were also part of it. Many poets of the then Vaduga region (North to Neelagiri hill ranges and East to Arabian sea) which is present Karnataka were also part of Sangam age. Vaduga was also a buffer region which had conflict with Tamil and at the same time resisted the advances of imperial Mouryas. These vaduga poets belonged to various provinces like Erumaioor (present Mysore), Konkaana (Konkan cost) and others.
According to Prof Shettar, Brahmi script was used in Deccan region (Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh) from 3rd century BC to AD. Many inscriptions of Mourya period found in the region during the period are in Prakrut language and Brahmi script. Buddhist and Jain monks of the period popularised Brahmi script and Prakrut language.
South India developed its own variant of Brahmi script called as Dakshina Brahmi of which Tamil-Brahmi was a sub genre. Experiments to replace Brahmi with Vattelittu script began in Tamil Nadu by 5th century AD.
However owing to technical problems, later Tamilians began experimenting with Grantha script which had its root in Dakshina Brahmi script. Later by synchronising Grantha with Vattelittu script, Tamil script was prepared by 8th century AD and reached its flowering stage by 12th century.
Dr Krishnamurthy, retired Vice Chancellor of Hyderabad Central University, who represents Karnataka in classical language committee set up by Union Government, has presented his argument based on the findings of Prof Shettar. Interestingly ‘Sangam Tamilagam mattu Kannada naaud-nudi’ book is being translated to Tamil.

I believe both languages are great and exist very long before.........we can find so many similar words between kannada and tamil i think very long before they drifted apart from one language.....
But i must say kannada's vocabulary, grammer, poetry, scripts, culture and traditions are just amazing i am telling tamil's is bad but i know kannada is better than that i'm very disappointed cause we have only halmidi inscription to show how old kannada is which is only 2000 years old i know its older than that......

The evidence for pre-Ashokan dispersal comes from Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu. The earliest attested Brahmi inscriptions in South Asia are found in the citadel of Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka and are dated to the 4th century BCE. According to Allchin et al., Brahmi developed before the southern spread of Ashokan missionary activities and spread across South Asia due to trade networks. There have been few inscriptions found in Tamil Nadu that have been tentatively dated to 5th century BCE in Porunthal.

Tamil is one of the longest surviving classical languages in the world.

It has been described as "the only language of contemporary India which is recognizably continuous with a classical past and having one of the richest literatures in the world.Tamil literature has existed for over 3000 years. The earliest epigraphic records found on rock edicts and hero stones date from around the 6th century BC.

The earliest period of Tamil literature, Sangam literature, is dated from ca. 300 BC – AD 300.

Tamil language inscriptions written c. 1st century BC and 2nd century AD have been discovered in Egypt, Sri Lanka and Thailand.

The two earliest manuscripts from India, to be acknowledged and registered by UNESCO Memory of the World register in 1997 and 2005 were in Tamil. More than 55% of the epigraphical inscriptions (about 55,000) found by the Archaeological Survey of India are in the Tamil language. The variety and quality of classical Tamil literature has led to its being described as one of the great classical traditions and literatures of the world. The oldest dated Tamil Brahmi inscription in the world has been found in Palani in Southern India scientifically dated to 540 BCE - the oldest known Brahmi inscriptions on the Indian sub-continent.

FYI,

Ancient Cities in Tamil Nadu May Be Over 12,000 Years Old.predate the Sumerian civilization .

CHENNAI, INDIA, January 5, 2003: A British marine archaeologist and author Graham Hancock has been examining a submerged city on the East Coast of Tamil Nadu. Mr. Hancock says a civilization thriving there may predate the Sumerian civilization of Mesopotamia in present-day Iraq and definitely existed before the Harappan civilization in India and Pakistan. He has been excavating the site off the coast of Poompuhar, near Nagapattinam, 400 km south of Chennai. At a meeting of the Mythic Society in Bangalore in early December, Mr. Hancock said underwater explorations in 2001 provided evidence that corroborated Tamil mythological stories of ancient floods. He said tidal waves of 400 feet or more could have swallowed this flourishing port city any time between 17,000 and 7,000 years ago, the date of the last Ice Age. The Gulf of Cambay was also submerged, taking with it evidence of early man's migration. The populations Mr. Wells and Mr. Pitchappan (see previous article) mapped settled on India's East Coast 50,000 to 35,000 years ago and developed into modern man. According to Hancock, "the Poompuhar underwater site could well provide evidence that it was the cradle of modern civilization." Hancock's theory is strengthened by findings of India's National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), which has explored the site since the 1980s. Man-made structures like well rims, horseshoe-shaped building sites are some of the lost city's secrets. At low tide, some brick structures from the Sangam era are still visible in places like Vanagiri. The region, archaeologists say, has been built over and over again through the ages and some of its past is now being revealed. Mr. Glenn Milne, a British geologist from Durham University, has confirmed Hancock's theory.

FYI,

The Tamil homeland or country.

Tamizhagam or Ancient Tamizh country refers to the Sangam period (6th century BCE - 4th century CE) territory of old South Indian royalties covering modern Tamil Nadu, Kerala and southern parts of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka. Historians use the term synonymous with South India to refer to the Tamil speaking regions of India, including Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

Although traditional accounts once referred to these territories as a single cultural area, where Tamil was the natural language and culture of all people, archaeological data from protohistoric Kerala and Tamil Nadu "appears to challenge this notion of a separate culture region."

During the Sangam period Tamil culture began to spread outside Tamilakam

FYI,

The Chola emperor. During his reign, he extended the influences of the already vast Chola empire up to the banks of the river Ganges in the north and across the ocean(Included KARNATAKA, ANTHARAS, KERALA,ORIYA,BENGAL Etc..).

Rajendra’s territories extended coastal Burma, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Maldives, conquered the kings of Srivijaya (Sumatra, Java and Malay Peninsula in South East Asia) and Pegu islands with his fleet of ships. He defeated Mahipala, the Pala king of Bengal and Bihar, and to commemorate his victory he built a new capital called Gangaikonda Cholapuram. The Cholas became one of the most powerful dynasties in Asia during his reign. The Tamil Chola armies exacted tribute from Thailand and the Khmer kingdom of Cambodia.

Chola dynasty known for its valour ruled parts of Southern India for long. Their heartland was the fertile valley of famed Kaveri river and they ruled for long time. At their peak, they reined over significantly larger area – the whole country south of Tungabhadra. Rajaraja Chola and Rajendra Chola are names to remember.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rajendra_Chola_I

Tamil emperor Arulmozhivarman alto titled Rajakesari was the King popularly known as Rajaraja Chola I. He established larger Chola empire during his rule between 985 and 1014 CE. His kingdom extended as far as Sri Lanka in the south, Kalinga (Odissa) in the North east. Besides his battle exploits, it was exactly a thousand and one years ago, he built the World’s first complete granite temple – a brilliant Brihadeeswarar Temple (Peruvudaiyar Kovil – Tanjore Big Temple)

His naval powers ensured that he annexed parts of Sri Lanka and occupied the islands of Maldives. The Cholas left a lasting legacy on the sea front which Tamilnadu can ever be proud of. His Navy could undertake combat and non combat missions, peace time patrol and interdiction of piracy, escort trade convoys and more, which a modern Naval super-power can be proud of.

NOTE :

Bangalore & kaveri are ancient time in Tamil Country ....
