This is terrible, they fought for our country and we aren't taking care of them. They are our heros, whether they were drafted or volunteered, we really need to make it more of a priority to help them. And I mean all of them, young and old.

It ain't necessarily so, and I "Know". As a vet myself, I can tell you that many folks they let in the service already have problems and would probably be on the street if they weren't being babysat by Uncle Sam. Just because someone is in the street, does not necessarily mean they have combat medals, have ever seen combat, or are of a high moral character. Now......I "am" all for increased vet benefits for vets who applied themselves (Good conduct ribbons, etc, advanced to "X" paygrade within so many years, etc.), and did not simply coast through for x number of years...

I remember seeing a "Homeless Vet" sitting in a
wheelchair at the street curb.
He had a sign that said;
VietNam Vet

Our vets know the reality of war and they many of them were targets. Our military go in as young men and the majority to serve and protect their homes and families. I can bet you they are still serving.

And with that mentallity you are claiming to be in the military? Those people you speak so loosely of are those that fight next to someone. Regardless of their mental stability they still went a faught for their country that is how one becomes a VET, not just from joining the military. Also when one returns from war there is no limits on what will make them a vet, you go to war you are a vet, you come back from war you are a vet. It doesn't say "if you didn't get any awards for going to war then you aren't considered a vet," you are one if you go to war. I am in the military, have been to Iraq got back and now I am a veteran and getting ready to go back again. And your stereotyping of people who joined is so far from reality. Some fall under that but thats not the majority of people that join. If they didn't go to a war then they wouldn't be considered veterans just ex-military. Here's this for the numbers 44,000 to 64,000 of them are vets from the current wars. If they don't go to war they don't get to use the VA. You need to learn something about todays military before you say some of these things. Now I don't like Bush and I don't like how the VA is ran but what you just stated was very very misleading and wrong at that.

People read this stuff.
Parents and grandparents tell their kids to screw the military before they screw you. Go figure ..
Filling ranks by lowering standards and accepting convicts has lethal consequences such as wack-jobs in combat. Keep those assholes away from any uniform other than prison stripes.
Ths article and thousands other like it will lead to an invasion by the boogie-man.
Take care of these heroes NOW.
Backwardsian,

That is how it "used to" be done (Giving cons a choice between doin' time or doin' time in the service). And most of these 'homeless' vets are from that Older me-generation pot-smoking Nam group. It's actually harder to get in the military these days, especially the marines. I have no doubt that the "Heroes" ARE being taken care of by various means. The rest can wash my car windows....

This is horrible. Other studies regarding homeless individuals portray mental illness as a characteristic of many.

I wonder if their is any correlation between veterans mental issues associated with their war service that the government ignores after they served our country?

As the wife of a Navy recruiter I know who they let in. Two years ago my husband and I were robbed and my husband does all he can to NOT let criminals in. A lot of the criminals don't make it too far along anyway, atleast in the Navy.
