To all the ladies out there, BEWARE. I hike all over this area with my husband,'cause i would not hike alone. Every trail we hike we usually see a woman hiking, or running alone. It makes me want to shake some sense into them. I worry about them very much, because you can't get away from the fact that you are the prey. Please, ladies be careful.

I come from a place where it is prudent to have bearspray for the griz, but this is the only place I consistently carry it, it's very effective on humans and legal to posses in the National Parks and Forests(hint hint). They have 'Remember M.E.' stickers at the hiker store in Hot Springs where they speak very fondly of her. I wish I would have known her.
We do know her, all of us. For that we remember her with love and respect. She did what she was suppose to. In her death we look at where she has alerted more women and men to the dangers that are out there. She lost her life but in that to honor her we remember the danger to all of us that walk alone.

Not only in the woods but the mall parking lots are a prime example of what can happen. Keep your guard up and look and watch.

People want to know why I don't have a ATM card...one of the reasons. They wont know before they steal it there is no money. They need you for that PIN number.

Why doesn't the bank issue a "distress" pin number that alerts them to someone in need of assistance?
Great idea. There would have to be one issued to each person, or else the "distress" pin would become public knowledge.

This really broke my heart, but what I find so hard to understand is why did she go hiking alone? I mean this kind of stuff has been happening for years now......remember Karen Styles in Bent Creek?? I guess she thought the dog would protect her. I went a few times on the parkway by myself back in the 1970's, but I even stopped that way back then. NEVER HIKE ALONE!!!!!!!!

Wow listening to those 911 tapes I am surprised they caught him at all. Those people answering 911 obviously weren't listening to what was said the first time around, and they don't sound like they know their area very well. Scary.

What is really scary- they found him at a gas station that is 20 feet from my Mom's house.
He frequented the park across the street from her house, where my Mom often took my son to play. Really hits home.

it's a d--- shame that you can't even walk on a public park path let alone walk outside the door of your own house and not be afraid. there are d---s like this every where and i sincerely hope when this pr--- goes to prison that he becomes someones b----. i feel very deeply for ms. emerson and her family. but rest assured you will get your justice. just hang in there. keep praying, and keep your head up and see ms. emerson smiling down from heaven.

The sad bad fact is that Hilton is one of many that may walk our trails. Be cautious, be alert, keep your safty parameters. And yes, Hilton needs to be terminated.
Absolutely and Amen!! Sadly, these days we cannot afford to turn our backs on anyone, regardless of how 'nice' they are. It's really a travesty. Remember, Hilton has family too, they should be included in your prayers.
Yes, the death penalty is alive in Florida.

Lets give him his own MSNBC segment then on AMW,a mention on saftey for hikers with his picture. Then, after the fame starts to ebb, have people write books about him!
We'll make him famous! A movie deal based on the book! A reporter will win an award, maybe after that a movie of the week on Lifetime !
Or maybe he ends up hanging from a tree !

My Grandmother lives near there too, alone. I know how you feel. My Grandma keeps a gun though so I feel a little better. She also has some good friends close by.

Well good she has some protection.
It's just so sad how you can't even play in the park anymore w/ out having to worry about creeps. I used to go to parks by myslef as a child and play all day ( well, until it was dark) and not have any worries in the World. I will be damned if I let my son play at a park by himself now.

Please stop talking about him. He doesn't deserve another thought or breath. She exemplified peace. She had a calming sense about her. I've never seen anything like it. She deserves the focus. She deserves to be remembered for what she lived for and not how she was taken away.
To the media, let her rest. Let us rest. She fought valiantly. We get it. There is no plausible reason to continue to feed his delusional state with more reference to the time he spent stealing her from us. Why you would choose to tell the planet that he violated her I'll never know. I was so impressed with the way the media helped us early on. How they can morph into people who find the loss of a beautiful girl's sanctity to be newsworthy, I can't imagine.
Steve
I am truly sorry for your lost of Meredith, she was something else. They say you can tell how a person is by the friends they keep around them. That is why I said she was something else. She was a daughter all of us fathers would love to have. Julia K. and you and I don't know how many others must be something else too.
I followed this from the first time I had heard a hiker was missing in those beautiful mountains till, well now, you guys made sure I, we, would know her and everything that she stood for and at least in my eyes you did more then you will ever know, for this I thank you. I had read somewhere that, Meredith, when talking to her mother, she was afraid that she would make a difference in this world, thanks to her and to you guys, I believe She has. Thanks. I wish all of you peace. Time eases everything and I hope it will help you and the one's close to Her.

Bear spray con be effective if you use it right. People need to practice with it not spraying it but think about a situation you can get into and how you should react.
Is there a way for people who don't live up there to get one of those Remember ME stickers I'd love to have one. Thanks good sugestion about the bear spray.

I've never seen bearspray sold around here, but you can get it mail order.$30 or 40 and yes they suggest test firing it, some of it leaves a dye on the offender. I'll try to find out about the stickers and at the least mail you some if they have any left. Check back to this forum in a couple days I should know by then. Bluff mtn outfitters will come up if you google it but are so busy this time of year with thruhikers that don't be offended if the don't get around to sending any to you, they a super great people, just busy.
