Wow. This conversation has been going on for a long time. If we care about solving the problem of pedophilia maybe we should talk about that and leave the revolving arguments alone. Of course that will mean getting into other revolving arguments like pornography etc etc, and nothing will get done and we will fall back on scape goating . . . alas . . .

As a child growing up I used to think of priests as being almost God-like and saviors. Now I view them with great suspicion, and I am reviled by many of them. As long as the Catholic church continues their archaic position of not allowing priests to marry, they will continue to attract sexual deviants (the good old boy's club). That is not to say there are not some that truly do have a higher calling.

It is also statistically verifiable that 80 percent of victims of sexual abuse are abused by a family member. The father of a family is 36 times more likely to abuse a child than a priest is, according to the National Center for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.

I believe the catholic church has been a place for gay men to hide their homosexuality for centuries. Before homosexuality was accepted, this was one of the ways you stayed in the closet. Additionally, it was a place you could meet other gay men. Unfortunately, some of the participants are wandering off the reservation approaching young boys. This has probably always happened throughout history, but it's been more difficult to squelch in recent years due to public awareness. Whatever percentage of servants in the catholic church are gay, I personally do not see this as a problem, until individuals break the law. This scenario is probably the same for nuns. It appears nuns have had less of a problem with seducing minors, as female homosexuality seems to not display the same deviant tendencies. A higher percentage of homosexual and heterosexual males have been known to like younger partners.

The law is law.

First tell us why you believe getting married cures pedophilia.Obviously it doesn't.Second, demonstrate that priests are more likely to be pedophiles than non-priests.
I'm not the Pope, but I think being married causes a lot of distraction that could interfere with their jobs.Add to that that most priests are full time priests, they don't have day jobs that earn the income to support a family, and that would put the burden of supporting wives and children on the congegation.
Your first statement brings up a valid point. Marriage would not "cure" pedophilia. Obviously, the majority of pedophiles tend to be married men. But my theory is that it would reduce the percentage of pedophilia in the priesthood in one important way. I think that many men who have these desires emerge in adolescence, especially if they are devout, often are drawn to the priesthood not by the opportunity to victimize, but by denial, and desire to repress these feelings. They think that by retreating into religious life, and celibacy, that they will be able suppress these drives. Obviously, many of them fail to do so. Thus, I think that many people with unresolved sexual issues are attracted to the priesthood. Allowing priests to marry would reduce the attraction of the profession to these people.
Secondly, your contention that it would be a financial burden for the church to support priest with families bears no relationship to reality. The church is wealthy beyond imagination, and could easily afford to pay a livable salary to priests. The end of celibacy rule would improve the church's service to the faithful. It is outdated and needs to be ended.
