Why? I can understand that mortal men have difficulty abstaining from sex forever, as men are made to procreate, but why do so many Catholic priests cheat on that rule and on top of that seem to be pedophiles? By the way, why does the Church refuse to do away with the rule that priests cannot marry- it's not a law in the Bible?

First tell us why you believe getting married cures pedophilia.Obviously it doesn't.Second, demonstrate that priests are more likely to be pedophiles than non-priests.

I'm not the Pope, but I think being married causes a lot of distraction that could interfere with their jobs.Add to that that most priests are full time priests, they don't have day jobs that earn the income to support a family, and that would put the burden of supporting wives and children on the congegation.

That's a bunch of bull. Being married would not be a distraction. They seem to have plenty of time to moleste young children. Maybe being married would be a better distraction.

There are so many cause that's what the media says there is. If a Jewish rabbi did this it wouldn't be reported. If a Catholic priest does this it gets reported. As a result everyone thinks Catholics are the only religion with this problem. Like there's something in Catholic DNA or something that makes them do this. It's that simple.

Other than your own ignorance and predjudice you haven't demonstrated anything.Calling my answer a "bunch of bull" is just a handy way of avoiding the fact that you can't answer the questions.

That seems to be a good explanation, however, why is it disproportiatly high among Catholic priests?

Because for decades the hierarchy of the church protected these animals. If you are a pedo, and your bosses shield you from accountability, wouldn't that be an incentive for other pedo's to join the same company?

Considering it was reported in Pakistan not long ago that they had about 2000 complaints of Muslim clerics molesting and/or trying to molest the little boys in the maddrasses (Islamic schools) and one boy who refused one of the clerics had acid thrown in his face, you can see this is far from being just a Catholic problem. Considering Muslims are encouraged greatly to marry, that doesn't have anything to do with it, either. Furthermore, this is far from just being a religious problem. This is a worldwide problem and this sickness is handed down from generation to generation. If one was sexually molested as a child, they are most certain to molest children as an adult. And while it's obvious that this is not a religious problem, it definitely gets more press attention when it is.

I forgot something. I think this is more of a power thing than anything else.

I would side with Phillip on one point, and disagree on another (via a just-a-simple reminder).

I would use *caution* at expressing '...*so many* catholic priests ...'.

Media hype, manipulation. Apparantly some priests are guilty. How many catholic priests are there in the world? In America? Granted, even 1 is too many, but is it really enough for the *kind* of controversy that its is painted to be?

How many secular *schoolteachers* are pedophiles? Youth counselors? Musicians? Shoe Salesmen? They come from all walks of life, and if statistics were compiled on catholic priests versus everyone else, maybe it would seem less of a controversy.

Phillip: On 'To Catch a Predator', one of the individuals WAS a Jewish Rabbi.

I'm not catholic, not 'taking their side' per se.

Heheh - MAJOR FAUX PAS in my last post, a syntax error. My 3rd paragraph. Understand that I DID NOT MEAN THAT EVEN ONE CATHOLIC PRIEST IN THE WORLD IS ONE TOO MANY. Hehehe. I meant just 1 catholic priest-PEDOPHILE is too many.

Sorry.

Glad I caught it quickly.

I have serious doubts that the proportion is higher or lower than any other segment of the population, but no doubts as to the percentage of reporting. The reason the Catholic Church can't really cry foul is that they basically knew there were some problems and dealt with it in a pretty lax way. Instead of reporting it they moved them around trying to avoid it. But that's not the same thing

That show is a little different and I think it's a little sick that they turn such an issue into entertainment but the show depicts an evolution in our understanding. I think a year ago my comment would have been shouted down but not this year.

Catholic priest pedophiles get all the attention in the media due to the anti-Christian, anti-Christmas philosophy of a very minor portion of our population. But this portion has big whiny, cry-baby attitudes. They kick and stomp and throw a tantrum trying to get everything Christian out of our society. For now they are tolerating Judaism and Islam as they concentrate on Christianity, but don't worry folks, your religion will be next on their agenda. Stand up to these anti-religion fascists now before it's too late.

Phillip: I understand the nature of your comment; I don't think of that show as 'entertainment', though. I *realize* that news shows in general are probably after ratings, and its a good question as to whether they REALLY have public service in mind. Anyway, I just meant to show that at least one entity in the media was willing to put a pedophile-jewish rabbi in the spotlight.

No big deal.

Technically there are very few pedophile preists. Most priests of abuse are Gay and they are targeting teenage boys. There is a different term for it other than pedophilia.

There was and is a shortage of preists. I am not sure when but at some point if you showed interest in becoming a preist they would let you in. There was no phsychological testing as there is now to get in.

Many gay men with an attraction to young boys saw the preisthood as an oppurtunity.

The reason Catholics have a celibacy rule is that in and around the 8'th century (?) they were having a problem with priests being married, and when they would die, the wife and children would want the riches of the parish to sustain them the rest of there lives.

The Catholic religion decide they were losing to much of there wealth and implemented the "no marriage policy" to take care of that problem.

There recently was a case where a Catholic preist got a woman pregnant and she went to court to get child support from the Catholic church and this preist. The defense was that preists don't get paid, and the Catholic church was not responsible for child support. They still refuse to take any responsibility for the actions of there sworn in by oath and married to God preists.

And just what percentage of Priests are pedophiles when compared to teachers, cops, and ministers? You perpetuate a myth because you fear your own mortality. Stop being such a dufus wimp.
