This is totally off-topic, so I apologize for that.

I'm a sports guy, and live in Long Beach, California, which has a population of just under half a million.

My city sent 32 athletes to the 2012 London Olympics. They garnered 15 medals: seven gold, six silver and two bronzes. If Long Beach was a country, it would have ended up 17th, with more medals than Spain, Brazil, Canada and Mexico among others.

Not too shabby.

Agreed.

Thanks for finally stating an opinion which PROPERLY compares the two.

Can you please STOP using the word 'monkeys' all the time?

It gives me a visual of you casually tossing feces at the bars of your cage.

Thanks.

If this had anything to do with anything or if it was funny, I might understand you writing this, but it's neither.

Just wow. Climate change or global warming, it is the biggest scam of my lifetime. Look Catch, this professor even from you mellow state has seen the light.

One of the top scientists in the United States, from the University of California at Santa Barbara, has resigned his post with the American Physical Society last week, calling global warming a scam. Harold Lewis, Professor Emeritus of Physics, released his letter of resignation to the public after sending it to the President of the American Physical Society, Curtis G. Callan, Jr.

I hadn't noticed.

The word FOLKS just bugs the he$$ out of me. It's a newly acquired pet peeve......in part I suppose because Obama uses it both incessantly and disingenuiously.

From his book, Dreams of my Father:
"That's just how white folks will do you."
"White folks." That's just as bizarre to me as saying, "colored folks" and the Obama-street-speak phrase "will DO you," is so grammatically screwy, it can't be fixed.

"We need to internalize this idea of excellence. Not many folks spend a lot of time trying to be excellent."
No Barry, most of us lazy, pea-picking FOLKS out here without a brain in our heads are underachievers and need you and the guvment telling us what to do.
==

When quoting Jerimiah Wright, Obama lamented in his memoir: "White folks' greed, runs a world in need." There it is again. White folks.....only that time for added poetic fun he threw in the word >greed.< That's about where he usually starts his sales pitch for redistribution.
==

The POTUS plants the word FOLKS for a few reasons and it's not something he picked up at Harvard, I can promise you that. Obama uses it to pretend he's warm and fuzzy and familiar with all us simple "folks" out here, he uses it as a term of false endearment, he uses it as a sales tool for getting votes (he used it about 15 times in the 2nd debate with Romney btw) and he has used it in a subliminal fashion through the years to incite his particular brand of racism. "We's gots to do something about them greedy white folks." Who do you think that kind of language appeals to en masse? It's not hard to figure out.

Folks" is not synonymous to "people" because of the connotation that comes with it. "People" can be used in any general context but the word "folks" indicates a certain warmth and intimacy and oneness which is not something I'm required to share nor wish to share with the POTUS. It's an all inclusive phrase and his use of it implies he thinks he has the liberty to lump Americans into one big huggy group of FOLKS which of course he gets to be the head of. I don't wanna be in his group of "folks."
====

On a lighter note when I hear the word folk I think of way down upon the Swannee river, I think of of folk dances and folk songs and folk music and the old folks home ...none of which holds much appeal for me. I think of black folks and white folks and colored folks, gentlefolk, townsfolk, menfolk, womenfolk and kinfolk.

BUT? I have resigned myself to simply having to suck it up Bobin and get used to all the "folk this" and "folk that" because the word has made an obvious comeback. But my chances of ever being comfortable with it or adopting it is about as likely as me ever saying, "ya'll."

Annyway, I didn't mean to offend you. It's my problem, not yours. So, from me and from my stuttering friend Porky Pig, I'll sign off with:

"Th-th-th-tha-tha-tha-tha t's all, folks!"

Funny. This whole thing reminds me of a restaurant chain called Po Folks. Most have long gone out of business. Found childhood memories for me. On the other note most of us are not in the President's group of folks. Its as fake as Hillary Clinton's accent when she gave a speech in Memphis some time back. Sad thing is while I think most know it optics really are number one on many voters list. Its how we ended up with the worst most corrupt Pres of my lifetime.

"Let me say it as simply as I can. Transparency will be the touchstone of this presidency."
I see only two 2 reasons Obama said that.
1) He intentionally lied.
2) He was incredibly naive.
===

It's probably fair to say that some-many-most candidates promise things they can't deliver but that transparency thing was a testament to how little he knew about what it means to actually BE President of the United States. The extreme kind of transparency he was talking about was ridiculous in the first place and would never even be recommended. Factor in the oily way he tends to operate and it made the fulfillment of the promise even more unlikely.

Either he didn't know about the nontransparent modus operandi that office often necessitates or he didn't realize what a manipulating, underhanded man he would become and had he known, it would have absolutely ruled out the transparency promise in the first place.
It was a foolish promise made by a Boy King.
Obama may not have understood the full complexity of that modus operandi you mentioned, Lyndi--I don't suppose anyone can, who hasn't been President of the United States. But I don't believe he ever had any intention of keeping his word regarding "transparency" if being "transparent" made him look bad. As far as Barack Obama is concerned, "transparency" is not an ideal to strive for, but only a tool to be used and laid aside at will.

Barack Obama is a hypocritical lying sneaking two-faced sonofabitch and the worst POTUS that America has ever had, period, going all the way back to George Washington. I do not believe he has EVER had this nation's best interests at heart: his real, although unacknowledged goal for America is a socialist nation, with government running the lives of American citizens, instead of American citizens controlling the government. Obama is a a TRAITOR, through and through, who is using the power of his office to undermine this nation in any way he can. I only hope the damage he is doing to America won't be permanent, and I wish January 20, 2017 was tomorrow.

Yes, I do routinely ignore Links, but I'm glad I made an exception this time :) I thoroughly enjoyed those lovely photos, and I've made a mental note to visit the Woodland Park and the Herb Festival there in Tulsa, if ever I get the chance :)

I think you and Chris would both appreciate the Norfolk Botanical Gardens in Norfolk, VA. They are also known as the Azalea Gardens, and even a short visit in the spring shows you why. They are beautiful at ANY time of year--there's always something in bloom, they are known for that--but when the azaleas are blooming, it's like heaven on earth :)

Some of my most cherished memories center around the Azalea Gardens :) By the way, every year in late April or May, I believe, the Azalea Festival is held there, with the Azalea Queen crowned, often a minor celebrity. One year when I was little, it was Patricia Nixon.

Bad Bob, your condescending attitude is a sad coomentary on America's lack of social graces.

I hope you don't travel overseas, you seem to be an unfortunate example of the ugly American.

"S'ok though. Some of us've come to expect backhills folk like you'all to be kinda "slow" figgerin' out these newfangled gadgets and whatnot. "

And Bob... Custer got what he deserved.

To "Bobin Tex", who is this "Dan Quale" you speak of?

And Chris, how can you deny the evidence around you?

"Climate change or global warming, it is the biggest scam of my lifetime."

On my, Lyndi, I hear your hidden speech in your statement "I think of way down upon the Swannee river", where you long to hear those darlies' voices calling... Wow.
And you consider that reference a "lighter note"...
Maybe not so light if you were one of them there "darkies"...
