IMO we need to try a surge in Afghanistan. Most military experts including Gen McChrystal believe we can turn the tide with more troops. But sending more troops leads to the kind of accident that killed these American kids.
The ISAF includes at least 25 nations who believe as we do- fight them there or fight them here. It's a simplistic view, but may be true.

Yeah Monk I think I agree witht he surge idea, if we see a real difference in the way the locals react to us. If we cannot get them to support us then we need to get the hell out. Then we have the question of how to protect the nation from attack from these guys. Police action? Covert missions? Drone the shit out of them?

As for today there will be many more. I can't tell you what it's like having a son getting ready to deploy (in a few months) to that hell hole.

I can tell you how it feels to have your son deploy. Mine has gone downrange 3x into the sandbox. It feels like your guts have been ripped from inside and you cry yourself to sleep every nite. But then seeing as I raised him as a single dad, he and I are very close.
