Satan didn't convince me to turn away from god, common sense and reason did. There is no Satan and there never was. He was a creation of someone's imagination, and so was god.

First you have to ask to which Satan you are referring, the OT or the NT version. They were completely different beings. According to the OT Satan was an obedient servant who did only what god commanded (Job).

In the NT, he is the "new and improved Satan". Christians gave him power, a realm, and demon servants. Of course all this was taken from Greek and Roman pagan mythology.

...Early in human history, however, God’s sovereignty was challenged. How did this come about? God commanded the first man, Adam, not to eat from a certain tree in the garden that was his Paradise home. And if he disobeyed?“You will positively die,” God told him.(Genesis 2:17) God’s command worked no hardship on Adam or his wife, Eve. Nevertheless, Satan convinced Eve that God was being unduly restrictive. What if she did eat from the tree? Satan told Eve outright:“You positively will not die. For God knows that in the very day of your eating from it your eyes are bound to be opened and you are bound to be like God, knowing good and bad.”—Genesis 3:1-5...
You said:

"Satan told Eve outright:“You positively will not die. For God knows that in the very day of your eating from it your eyes are bound to be opened and you are bound to be like God, knowing good and bad.”—Genesis 3:1-5."

How did Satan lie? According to Genesis 3:22:

"And the Lord God said,“See, the man has become like one of Us, to know good and evil."
which is exactly what "Satan" said would happen.

(I put Satan in quotation marks because there is no evidence the serpent in the garden and Satan in Job are the same being, in fact scripture contradicts this idea. Satan in Job was not "livestock", he wasn't a "beast of the field", nor did he "crawl on his belly" and "eat dust" as the curse of Genesis 3:14 indicates the serpent would.)

Satan is a fictional being, a metaphor for evil. Believing in him diminishes the concept of self-responsibility.

Fundies, please grow up.

A negative correlation. The more religious, the less moral.

You've left out my portion of the population. I think that's discrimination. I'm not comfortable with naked chicks. What term do you use for naked men?

My favorite is when christians insist only believers can properly interpret the bible, and then can't agree with each other on what it means.
Talk about being full of shit...
Yes. Indeed.

Put any two Christian-fundies in a room together for a time, and you will get at least 3 versions of Christianity: person A's brand, person B's brand and the intersection of those two-- over which they will fight tooth-and-nail, unless they perceive a 3rd person in the room....

Nice analysis.

"satan" in the Hebrew scriptures was in reality not an evil being--but a "seeker of the truth" or "a counselor" or "an advocate" or "tester" or similar. There really is not a good English concept to express his role.

In fact, it was the Middle ages that really got satan out of a minor role into the role of an anti-god.

That role expanded to the point that satan had power at least equal to that of god's-- and many believer-types thought the struggle between the two was eternal: no end.
