They were priest's helpers, in a way.

You know Moses was a Levite?

You know there are still Levites, descendants of Jacob, today?

Which one tells you not to - that you are exempt?
Just because the Bible says "thou shalt not suffer a witch to live" does not imply that means everybody who reads and obeys the Bible must follow every single word in it.

Just as with the Levite laws, Christians aren't supposed to follow the laws in exodus, either.

Jesus changed everything.

<quoted text> It doesn't matter that you think the bible doesn't tell people to mistreat humans.
What matters is people have used it in such away.
Just because it doesn't tell you that, means little to the people abused and murdered by the people who did think the bible meant for them to do that.
Just because it doesn't tell you that "personally", means what?
Nothing - when other people can read it and get exactly that.<quoted text> A meaningless point. It's used in a negative way by thousands of sects, cults, the insane, and megalomaniacal people today.
It was used in the same ways "back then", too.
<quoted text> Sure it was and is. Look at the Inquisition, Witch trials, Abortion clinic bombings, Lynchings, and other barbaric or heinous acts all committed in its name - the name of the bible - and your deity.
<quoted text>
So what? That doesn't make me feel any better. I'm sure it doesn't make the people who have died or suffered because of it feel any better either.
It comes to mind serial killers and other warped individuals rely heavily upon ceremony.
<quoted text>
Who is talking about a law or "laws" here? Your bible is not a book of laws. It's a mythic book that some people believe, and some people choose to follow it. Some people do terrible things because of it. A book of myth.
I'm talking about the negative effects the mythical bible and your mythic deity belief can have upon people and society.
Not laws.
All I can say is that some people, including atheists, misread the Bible.

It's actually pretty amazing how many people do.

Like it or not, everything is a belief. We believe that the world around is real when it could all be a dream. There is no way to prove it isn't.

"You should not let a sorceress live.(Exodus 22:17 NAB)"
"A man or a woman who acts as a medium or fortuneteller shall be put to death by stoning; they have no one but themselves to blame for their death.(Leviticus 20:27 NAB)"
So what am I getting wrong here?
Nothing.

The ancient Israelite and Levite laws are written for all to see.

Here's a worse one!
Deuteronomy 13: 6“If your brother, your mother’s son, or your son or daughter, or the wife you cherish, or your friend who is as your own soul, entice you secretly, saying,‘Let us go and serve other gods’(whom neither you nor your fathers have known,7of the gods of the peoples who are around you, near you or far from you, from one end of the earth to the other end),8you shall not yield to him or listen to him; and your eye shall not pity him, nor shall you spare or conceal him.9“But you shall surely kill him; your hand shall be first against him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people.10“So you shall stone him to death because he has sought to seduce you from the LORD your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.11“Then all Israel will hear and be afraid, and will never again do such a wicked thing among you."
So kill you loved ones if they turn away from your deities.
How kind of the Bible!
"They", not "we".

Italians used to kill people in the colosseum. Does that mean they still do?

The Bible also refers to bats as birds. Do we still call them birds?

It's a story of THEIR culture and rules. Rules that Jesus changed.

Good morning to all...

Too much to catch up on so...

Trifecta...I saw your post yesterday concerning BenAdam...I just wanted to commend you for that. We don't ever know what is going on in other peoples lives that might cause them to respond the way that they do.

Rider...you asked if homosexuals were condemned in the church that I attended...LOL...all sex was condemned!

Actually...where I grew up the word "sex" was whispered...nor discussed...nor even explained to children. At most...the phrase..."sins of the flesh" was preached from the pulpit. I had no idea what "sins of the flesh" meant.

If this gives you and idea...when my sister married (many years ago) her husband had been divorced. She hid that from my parents and the community because the people in my area considered that "sinful".

The area where I grew up is VERY homophobic and probably many gays remain in hiding. Looking back...they were also racist...though not verbally but by thought process.

There is still a county close by to where I grew up that if a black family moves in...they are unwelcome and attempts are made to make them leave.

So the area has gotten better I suppose but I didn't fit in there as a child...I still don't. I owe that to my mother...she set the example of "love they neighbor".

An example...my nephew married a girl from Fiji...most in the area consider her black because she is darker skinned...my sister worries that people will treat her as she is black. What is funny about that...she (my niece) and I went shopping together one day...3 different people (strangers) thought she was my daughter! We laughed our butts off.

BTW Rider...did you ever start your walk training? I hurt my knee on a stationary bike so I had to stop for a while and then start all over.

don't waste my time telling me that Christians are taught to kill witches.
It's more a waste of his time.

Old Testament commands in Exodus 22:18 that, "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live" and then again in Leviticus 20:27 that, "A man also or woman that hath a familiar spirit, or is a wizard, shall surely be put to death"

Your only rebuttal to that is that in a remote part of the same bible, one can find a scripture from Paul negating Old Testament law. But so what? Jesus contradicts Paul on that matter.

The Middle Ages were filled with examples of Christians that disagreed with you, and the same is true in Africa today.

And that's what matters: not your preferred interpretation of those words, but what people did and do with them. Not only can you not polish that turd, the more you try, the more the rebuttal appears in print as well. If you think that's a win or a wash for you, think again.

Irrelevant. If you were taught to be a homophobe and you didn't learn it in church, you learned it from people that did, or from people that learned it from people that did.
The point is that if the church were not conducting its campaign to scapegoat and marginalize gays, homophobia would be rare in America, and that if it can be silenced, homophobia will fade and eventually all but disappear.
And the exact same thing is true regarding atheophobia. It is a Christian project.
There is no reason to expect Christians to acknowledge any such things.
Try as you might you cannot besmirch the "church". The church will always be, and it may be slow but its ahead of you.

The recent re-edits of the Ancient Alien series have inserted "According to Ancient Alien Theorists" into the dialogues.

They are relating a variety of actual beliefs out there, there was no deception nor presented in an unethical matter. It was however confusingly presented in the past.

You are aware the the history channel no longer has a good reputation, right? It puts all kind of bs on TV about aliens and whatever.
Here:
"We sequenced the complementary DNAs that encode the FOXP2
protein in the chimpanzee, gorilla, orang-utan, rhesus macaque
and mouse, and compared them with the human cDNA. We also
investigated intraspecific variation of the human FOXP2 gene.
Here we show that human FOXP2 contains changes in aminoacid coding and a pattern of nucleotide polymorphism, which strongly suggest that this gene has been the target of selection
during recent human evolution."

Your source is not a science one. Either they're flatly lying b/c of money or political leaning, they didn't do their homework, or their just stupid.
Genes do not suddenly appear out of thin air. That's quite impossible.

I sympathize with them...not because they are Christian but because a minority is being targeted because they are different.

I read an article yesterday on why Christians are being targeted.

One they are the minority...less than 10% of Egypt's population.

Two...the government does not offer them protection thus leaving them vulnerable to discrimination and attacks.

Does that sound familiar to you? I could not help but make the correlation between that group of people and other groups of people that have experienced some of the same.

Reminds me of this quote...

First they came for the communists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist.

Then they came for the socialists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist.

Then they came for me,
and there was no one left to speak for me.

Jesus and the Early Christians certainly were. Only Paul's apostate cult wasn't. They were pagans and still are.
