A secular person within the context you speak of, rejects religion and the "supernatural". That definition is suitable for this conversation. Also, they may very well hold a belief that does not qualify as religious, nor incorporate a "supernatural" component, and still not be atheist, agnostic etc...
A Secular Humanist? For space considerations, go here and read.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secular_humanism

Alright then. Why does a secular person fight Christianity so much?

RiversideHick wrote:
The way I see it, atheists don't believe in gods and secular humanists believe in the betterment of humanity.
An atheist does not have the faith supported theistic belief that gods exist.
Right, so an atheist doesn't believe in gods.
You'll see there is much more detail and certain specific precepts found in Secular Humanism, not attached to being a secular person, in stance.
Yes, I see that.

It appears that Secular Humanism is sort of a religion (or a doctrine) all it's own.

Whereas a secular person just isn't into religion at all.
Yeah. Explain it, if you can. Demonstrate how it causes you suffering.
Ahh, I see, when you "joke", or comment about a persons ethnicity, sexual preference, body type or shape, derogatory comments towards women, lack of your religious belief, and various other things that I have seen you do...
<RH> "It's a joke or an observation, lighten up, I don't believe in that politically correct stuff, a funny joke is a funny joke, an observation is an observation, it's just an opinion, don't be so uptight ..."
Maybe it's not funny to other people, even if you find it funny, and even more, if you find it funny and then ridicule them for saying something about it. Maybe they are hurt, or suffer.
But, your religious belief, which you say is a choice, not a circumstance of birth or birthplace, is off limits, and...
<RH> "Hey! That's my religious belief you're talking about! Ease up, that hurts. You shouldn't say stuff like that!"
Would it help if I said it was a joke, and then ridiculed you for objecting to the "funny" I just made? Would that ease you hurt or suffering?
Lemme clue you in on something. I'm atheist. I'm used to being derided, cursed, cussed, told I'm no good, worthless, a pariah, and the downfall of humanity.
It used to bother me, but now? I don't care. I know none of those things apply to me. I don't feel persecuted. I don't feel anger. I don't allow those things that people say - who are primarily Christian - to define me, as it is only I that actually defines myself, even though other people - not atheist - try. But that's me.
Mostly, I roll with it.
Maybe you should learn to roll with it, too. Does the prospect of that not seem too desirable? Here's an idea; Just think of it like a "joke".
That'll work~/.
I'm not a Secular Humanist.
Scar says: "Deal with it, RH."

Gotcha.

Do you know what a spring is? They're talking about water coming out of the land. They call it deep because they want you, the reader, to know it's not going to dry up.

It's not a deep sea vent. Do you even know what a deep sea vent is?

"The philosophy or life stance of secular humanism...embraces human reason, ethics, social justice and philosophical naturalism, while specifically rejecting religious dogma, supernaturalism, pseudoscience or superstition as the basis of morality and decision making"

That is inherantly flawed, as one person's idea of morality is different than the next. And with that phylosophy there's no copmass to determine what is and what is not ethical, justice and moral.

We need to put more emphasis on teaching the philosophy of science in public schools. I remember learning about the scientific method when I went to school, but there was little focus given to explaining the importance of it. We also need to make sure we teach everyone about logic. I learned through computer programming, but that wasn't a required course at the time.
Even if the fundies realized that teaching logic and the philosophy of science is in essence teaching rational skepticism, how could they openly oppose it without looking exactly like people who want to keep children ignorant? The attempt alone to put more focus on these subjects, and the subsequent opposition from YouKnowWho, would give us another example of how damaging faith is. So even if the attempt to improve education fails, the failure would make an excellent example to utilize later.
Skeptics are doing a lot right now just by socializing on the internet. This environment favors logically compelling arguments, while being a bad fit for the types of manipulation religion relies on to perpetuate. The shift in America towards more socialization on the internet is bad for religion. There's too much competition here, and the playing field is too fair. A type of natural selection is taking place.

Atheists who left Atheism

Book: A Skeptic's Search for God

Dr. Ralph O. Muncaster: "A former atheist and hardcore Bible skeptic, Ralph spent 15 years conducting research to dispute the Bible. To Ralph, it seemed that the Bible could not possibly be consistent with such sciences as anthropology, molecular biology and physics. Armed with an engineering-education and a critical, questioning mind, to his surprise, the more he searched, the more evidence he found that supported the Bible's claims.

Incorrect. Genesis 22:2 does not say first born son.
2 Then God said,“Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.”
How many "only sons" can one person have?

"F" is cussing?

Foot up his butt is cussing?

What did you think it stood for?

Believe me...shrinky dink would not be allowed to touch any sensitive spot on me...I would rather become a nun!

Strange...you think the word "foot" is a cuss word.

Besides...why would shrinky dink make me pissed and angry...he is just a "F"...

Figure this one out yourself...but it is not a cuss word...at least not that I know of.

LOL

I know Trifecta...I know...you thought your post would make me pissed and angry...I can not help but be amused.

One only becomes pissed and angry because of another person's actions if one allows it. We all make that decision to laugh it off...or get pissy.

LOL Personally...you nor shrinky dink is worth being pissy over...and certainly not angry.

Name-calling again...

You must have missed a few of your "Jesus Follower" classes. You might want to check and see if there are any make-up classes offered.

There are also secular resurrection motifs through out the book as well. I think Dickens was a heretic.
No, I didn't remember, but I've just reviewed a synopsis of the novel and am somewhat up to speed.

Why do you think that that is significant? Why did you want to bring it up now?

You are correct. God said "Your only son"
"And He said:'Take now thy son, thine only son, "
The only time Abraham had only one son was before Isaac was born. That was Ishmael.
Sorry, your Bible is so full of mistakes it is hard to keep track of them.
If God wrote the Bible he must have been drunk as Lot.
"your only son, whom you love"

If you keep reading the Bible, you'll get to Hebrews.

Hebrews 11:17–19 will explain that passage better for you. It tells you that "your only son, whom you love" means Isaac was Abraham's only begotten son, like Jesus is to God.

Not everyone is into science as much as y'all are.

Science is not the only way to improve the education, logic and thinking skills.

That's the secularist agenda - to completely remove emotions from everything and turn us all into Vulcans.

Here is the Hebrew word and definitions that was used for "deep" in Genesis 7:11

Tehowm:

1) deep, depths, deep places, abyss, the deep, sea

a) deep (of subterranean waters)

b) deep, sea, abysses (of sea)

c) primeval ocean, deep

d) deep, depth (of river)

e) abyss, the grave

Don't you know...it doesn't apply to them...Jesus was talking about those other people.

Seriously...there are those that believe that they have the right to judge others (even will back it up with scripture) yet at the same time they believe that no one has the right to judge them.

I think some Christians missed the part about leaving the judgment of those outside the church to God...
