Beautifully put Doc, however, might it not be easier for folks to comprehend if one simply says; Humanism = Caring about all people and stuff. Just a thought.
Thanks, Juice, but that wasn't my message there. My message wasn't so much about what humanism is as it was about what it isn't. Humanism is not a religion in theological sense of the word. It is an alternative to theological systems. From the Affirmations of Humanism:

"We affirm humanism as a realistic alternative to theologies of despair and ideologies of violence ..."

Humanism: We're good without God.
That gets the hive buzzing. It was put up as a roadside billboard in Idaho:

"At some point, you figure the “controversy” would just subside, but it hasn’t abated yet. In fact, the protests and complaints (which are really over nothing) never seem to stop. So the billboards will keep coming."

The point is that Christians do not tolerate even benign comments from unbelievers gracefully. The rules are to never question god belief publicly, which is perceived as an attack on Christianity, or be attacked.

Yaaaay! Let's push her special points and see how turned on she gets!

You'd advocate taking away a person's right to choose?
RR, you are the funniest person alive.

.. to me, it's toxic. Posters like d'Shrink or Adam aren't worth reading and they're on my ignore list along with a few others in this forum ..
.. we all handle things differently. Silence is a great tool. To me, slapping Serah on the skull isn't going to make her wake up. While I do not know her relationship with her brother, her sibling probably knows exactly how she feels and I will not shutdown our communication by hammering her. She 'got' the DNA error. Baby steps ..
So..to you.. Serah and her ridiculousness gets a free pass?
She is one of the biggest mouths here on wsjlm who wants to silence those who oppose
her way of thinking..

She still doesn't get that suggesting a DNA repair "solution" was out of line.

To me, Serah is much more of a danger to society than those fools you refer to here.
Baby steps you say??
She has been on here since topix began..
She is toxic..

I agree with phobias not being genetic.
Example;
When my boys were tiny squids, they had no fear of anything at all, then;
* They developed my fear of spiders, all but one that is.
* They developed my exes family fear of God and Hell, all but one that is.
* They developed my exes fear of heights, all but one that is.
* They developed their grandmother's fear of the word 'sex', might as well be scared of the word 'grass' for crying out loud.
I could site more but can't be bothered, anyone with reasonable brain capacity will understand.
Gday Luce.

So what you're saying here is that phobias are programmed into children. Well, I have a few of my mother's hangups.

It's a lot different to being afraid of powerpoints or hot stoves.

I don't know if those that crucified Jesus were sent to hell or not. There's no way I COULD know.
And quit blaming Jesus :p
Good answer, fits in with a non-arrogant understanding of your religion. Kind of odd from an outsiders' point of view.

That's like a Buddhist writing "I don't know what name Buddha gave Chokosan in the afterlife. How could I know such a thing?"

Atheists are the worst killers humanity has ever come across.
"State atheism is the official promotion of atheism by a government, sometimes combined with active suppression of religious freedom and practice.
State atheism in Albania was taken to an extreme during the totalitarian regime installed after World War II, when religions, identified as imports foreign to Albanian culture, were banned altogether.[30] The Agrarian Reform Law of August 1945 nationalized most property of religious institutions, including the estates of monasteries, orders, and dioceses. Many clergy and believers were tried, tortured, and executed."

Why bother us with that?

We are not merely atheists. We are humanists. We embrace reason, democracy, individual freedoms, rational ethics, science and the like - not state atheism. We deplore ideologies of violence as much as we do theologies of despair for the same reason: they are the same thing, namely authoritarian cults of personality. Jehovah-Jesus doesn't take surveys or count hands any more than Stalin did. They were are both gods that demand exaltation and absolute obedience, the only difference being that one is supernatural and fictitious, the other flesh and blood.

Humanist would like to rid the world of both ideologies of violence and theologies of despair, and replace them with the greatest ideology ever devised by man. If you live in a democratic society and have rights, you can thank humanism.

Not speculation; fact.
Same thing with racism.
It is a taught behaviour.
I can't even believe RR is trying to argue homophobia is a trait one is born with..
lol.
Of course it's taught.. Just like racism..

I had a childhood friend who would not swim in our town pool
If a black child was in that pool.. I would think to my self... "Why not"..
She was a victim of racism..
