Today's Prayer

Dear Lord, please help me become a "5-Star" Christian. I want to follow the example Jesus gave to serve others with excellence. Please help me have the right attitude toward the people in my life and to show genuine concern for others. May you be glorified in all I think, say, and do. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Recalibrate your Route (Prime time with God)

The crooked roads shall become straight, the rough ways smooth" (Luke 3:5).

I love the Global Positioning Systems (GPS) in the new cars. A voice comes on and tells me how far I have to go and when to turn. However, sometimes I get off course and the voice says: "Recalculating route." The GPS is telling me I have gone off course and it is now recalculating the route based on my wrong turn. Sometimes we can make wrong turns in our spiritual lives. We think we are going the right direction only to discover it was never God's will to enter that relationship, make that business deal, hire that person - the examples are limitless.

There is an amazing thing about God. He can make our crooked places straight. He has an ability to make whatever blunder you make turn out right. It may mean there might be some consequences to those decisions, but He will always allow your actions to work together for good for those called according to His purposes if we repent and seek Him fully to make things right. These lessons can even contribute to greater wisdom in our lives if we learn from our mistakes.

God's omnipotence is always one step ahead of our incompetence. Do you think He knew you would make that misstep? Absolutely. Do you think your life was planned even with that misstep figured in? Absolutely.

Isn't it comforting to know you cannot plan God out of the equation no matter how bad you mess up? He will always turn crooked places into straight places for those who are humble and contrite.

Do you need a crooked place straightened out today? Ask Him to straighten the course so you can flow in His perfect will for your life.

While I am thinking about it, a few nights ago, you and skom were having a very good discussion, I think it was on addiction. Anyway, I felt both of you presented very good information and it was enjoyable to read. You commented on DesCartes and Dualism. I didn't want to interrupt the conversation so I didn't comment. But, some of DesCartes arguments were lacking or better put, below his ability. He seemed to not know what to do with Spirituality. After going through the well thought out process that concluded with his "I think therefore I am" comment, he jumped to therefore God must exist, with little thought behind it. That combined with his dualism presentation, left me thinking he either couldn't grasp the effect of the spiritual on the physical or couldn't find a conclusive way of presenting it. Anyway I felt shortchanged after his arguments. Again, the discussion the other night was very enjoyable and informative. Hopefully there will be more of that kind of substantive discussions.
Thanks. I'm glad that one of you understood.

Descarte was a dualist. He thought that mind and matter were radically different substances from non-overlapping realms of existence. Taken to its extreme, we get the form of dualism called occasionalism. From Wiki:

"Occasionalism is a philosophical theory about causation which says that created substances cannot be efficient causes of events. Instead, all events are taken to be caused directly by God [...] One of the motivations for the theory is the dualist belief that mind and matter are so utterly different in their essences that one cannot affect the other. Thus, a person's mind cannot be the true cause of his hand's moving, nor can a physical wound be the true cause of mental anguish. In other words, the mental cannot cause the physical and vice versa."

They are saying that between you thinking about moving your hand and it moving, God must intervene and move the hand for you, as nothing from the mental world can connect to the physical world directly. And if He moves your hand onto a hot stove and you feel pain, He was the source of that pain, not the heat.

This is the kind of hypothesis that supports the Christian doctrines of the soul (and mind) leaving the body and existing independently from it.

A more naturalistic hypothesis is a form of monism - monism means that mind and matter are different manifestations of the same substance - called epiphenomenalism. With this outlook, mind is an emergent phenomenon of matter, like wetness is of water - not something separate that can be removed. Also from Wiki:

"Epiphenomenalism is the theory in philosophy of mind that mental phenomena are caused by physical processes in the brain [...] The history of epiphenomenalism goes back to the post-Cartesian attempt to solve the riddle of Cartesian dualism, i.e., of how mind and body could interact."

Question: are other liquids wet? Is lava wet? Is oil wet? Is mercury wet? Or is only liquid water wet.

Philosophy is fun, and challenging. And thanks for the pleasant post.

There you go, Blind Man. Here is another point of view on causality. Does a tug on the finger lead directly to the anal expulsion of gas (the digital-flatal reflex), or is an act of God necessary (I capitalized that for Rider)? These are the enigmas that have occupied men's minds since the discovery of alcohol.

So When Jesus said in: Matthew 24:34, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled. That scoundrel was lying and he knew it?
blind man n the bleachers wrote:
No, I don't see that at all. Not saying that this is the way it is, or the way he meant it. I have seen many explain it in different ways. I however come up with this. Notice verses the two verses before. Jesus just told a story about a fig tree. When it brings forth leaves, you know that summer is coming. Then he said that when you see all of these things that he had just previously talked about, they can know it is near, even at the door. Then to the verse you brought up. Not only is it near and at the door, This generation, that sees these things happening, will not pass, not only till it is at the door coming in, but the generation that sees these things happening will see it come near, at the door, and come in and complete what he had just said.
Again, just some of my thoughts on the matter.
It's possible to reconcile any apparent contradiction if you are free to be creative about it.

That is why it is not very useful or convincing to hear how a believer rectifies the self-contradictions, scientific and historical errors, unfulfilled prophecies and unkept promises of the bible unless he is using that same bible and only that bible to do it.

I understand now.
You're saying is that the test of a prophet as described in Deuteronomy is wrong.
OK Khatru, let me try and explain, as your words have never entered my mind.
So no... I am not saying the test of a prophet as described in Deuteronomy is wrong.
I am saying re Nineveh's non destruction, that God had every right to change his own mind, and does not mean that 'Jonah' failed. Jonah was just the messenger of the prophesy of that time, and God the 'truth' concerning the prophesy.

Because of that truth, the reason 'Nineveh repented' and was spared, Nineveh played a huge role in Jesus's prophesy re 'the men of Nineveh'.
These folk are the Kurds of today... as they were even then. This prophesy came true in our time, so was equally true / correct.

re Deuteronomy 18
“22 When a Prophet speaketh in the Name of the Lord, if the thing follow not nor come to pass, that is the thing which the Lord hath not spoken, but the Prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not therefore be afraid of him.”

I believe this is clear enough, but if not for you... an analogy.
If you were a prophet with a message from God, and carried it over as the messenger, it would not mean God could not change his mind about that prophesy... but goes on to explain - keeping to the analogy - that 'if' you - the prophet - assumed you were speaking for God, when in truth you were not, no-one should fear your prediction... because it would not come true when it was not truth.

I hope that helps. I know you don't believe, but as I said, I personally have too much evidence of such things, so nothing will change this for me.

Sin of the flesh. Hmmm, a scary and fleshy subject for most. Are there any sins that are not of the flesh or did you mean sexual sins?
Yes, some sins are worse, not as far as God's ability to save, but as far as man's ability to find the cross. A drug addict, alcholic and homosexual are usually deep engrained in their sin. Their identity as self are emerged in that sin, which is why in all three cases there is a high degree of withdrawal. Jesus told us that we shall cast out demons. Where did these demons go and where are they today?

Congressman: IRS Demanded to Know Content of Pro-Life Group’s Prayers

Illinois Congressman Aaron Schock during the House Ways and Means Committee hearing on the IRS scandal on Friday made a shocking claim: the IRS once asked an Iowa-based pro-life group to reveal the content of their prayers.

“Their question, specifically asked from the IRS to the Coalition for Life of Iowa:‘Please detail the content of the members of your organization’s prayers,’” Rep. Schock said while grilling ousted IRS interim chief Steven Miller,.
