Do you have doubts, sometimes?
I know you're talking to Skom here, but just wanted to say I don't have doubts. Just a Faith that grows stronger as time passes, due to the experiences in my life that have on occasion,'blown me away'(in a good way of course) and the feeling is so awesome, that I just feel so excited but for no other reason than feeling awesome. Very hard to explain :)

Probably for the same reason that you and others want to evade the question. You both realize that the answer will expose the absurdity of your theology.

There are many such examples of Christian doctrine painting itself into a corner by contradicting itself, as with the omniscience vs free will problem. In any of them, you are forced to come up with bizarre and ridiculous answers, or evade the question altogether.

And I notice that you have been silent about my answer to your question about the year I became a doctor despite asking repeatedly and even trying to taunt and manipulate me into answering. I gave you my answer, and haven't seen any comment from you about it. Is that because you were hoping to spring some kind of trap if I gave you an answer that you could pounce on?

If so, doesn't that make you a little man with a tiny spirit? Isn't that the kind of thing that a little man does?

I feel the same... mostly. In the beginning I didn't come in here outside of the question WSJLM, and have said, I cannot even imagine why he should love me at all!
That said, any folk who can converse with respect makes it a better world... anywhere. As for justifying one to the other, facts are sometimes overlooked that many do know the Bible as good as anyone else called Christian, having made their decisions long before what their choice is now. What I don't understand is, even if there is strong opposition, why must then a Christian not respect this fact, rather than hanging on every breath - even if some others do the same to oppose - just to look for a break in the clouds to save their souls? That already is their free will to either give up on when they chose to leave this path, or not go there. Isn't this called respect also?
I grew to love Micha, even tho he gave me the rawest deal in the beginning, we had a warm respect for what we did have in common soon after that. You have the gift of speech... and that is a blessing called yours. I only wish to share... maybe that's mine. So what should a thread like this bend from being ourselves rather than a sermon on saving souls? They could open another thread to thrash that one out, but it is not my duty as a pw... which is my life, and not just in this place. And now that it also is Prove there's a God??? Where that thread gone? Isn't there enough space to share such respect?
Either way... despite agree to disagree... without respect no-one is anything, Christian or not.
Love and Peace always my friend and good to say hello between the battle fields!~~smile~~ Take Care.'We cam, we saw, we conquered.'

I have regrets..... and they are usually when I went against my own gut instincts, but in saying that, I did learn and rarely make those same types of mistakes, but they do happen LOL

I don't on purpose. Sometimes I drive and they run into my truck. I tell myself that it's not my fault. I have to drive. I don't have any other way of getting to where I"m going.
I like spiders. I usually keep one or two somewhere on my person. Pockets and such.
I have faith that the spiders won't bite me and they have faith that I won't crush them between my hands. Either of us could do the opposite at any time but we don't. Why is that?
How are the spiders weaving their webs somewhere on your person? I have a bug catcher and use that to catch the spiders and toss them outside, although I do have to protect the dog (and visitors etc) and kill the red backs that get under the outdoor chairs and furniture. And any other venomous spider I happen to come across. Here is a link you might find interesting....

Would we know we were "mindless robots', as you put it, if no one had free will? What would >we< be missing, if there was nothing there to miss?
Skombolis wrote:
Yeah we would probably not be aware it happened. But since right now you can think and act for yourself, is that something you would want? You are capable of considering it now since your mind is free. would the tradeoff be worth it? Would you prefer to be a mindless robot? The question isnt could God do it or would we know after but rather would it be worth taking all the real meaning and individuality and personalities that makes us unique out of life? What would be the point? Dont you prefer to be able to make your own choices?
You've missed the point as usual. You claim that man has free will. The counterclaim is that you don't know that - that you couldnot know that - because our experience is exactly like have a determined will. It is EXACTLY like being a robot and not realizing it. You said so yourself:

"Yeah we would probably not be aware it happened."

I asked Trifecta what free will is and he evaded the question. It speaks to this same matter. If you have a will, what does it mean to say that it is free or not? What is a free will? What is a will that is not free? If you can't define the difference, or feel the difference, what are you talking saying that man has, and what justification do you have for calling it a free will?

The other obvious implication of this is that if your god exists and wants me to love him under penalty of hell, I would prefer that he gave me the will to do that which he preferred rather than letting me make a mistake. It would be a win-win. As you noted, it would feel the same to me.

If you had the power to program your children to prevent them form making obvious and costly errors, would not you use it? Don't we do the next best thing, and try to train them to behave according to our understanding of what is best for them? For example, if your parents could have made drug abuse and addiction and other crime impossible for you by stripping your free will to do these things from you, wouldn't they have been doing you a favor?

Then why didn't your god do that for man if he exists? What we usually hear is that we shouldn't want to be robots, which is wrong. We should, since it doesn't feel any different.

Also, we hear that your god prefers people that could have rejected him, but didn't. That's pretty selfish, since it results in the wastage of 90+ percent of souls that would have made just as good worshipers as the others if properly programmed.

What if your parents had the power to prevent you and any siblings you might have from making the mistakes you made, but they didn't do so because they preferred drug free children that could have become addicts, and allowed you to fail and suffer on that basis? Would that be OK with you? It wouldn't be OK with me.

These are kinds of issues that upon close scrutiny reveal that your theology is confused. A loving god doesn't give his creatures the chance to fail him and suffer for it. But that is exactly what the many pronouncements of what your god is said to be and to have done add up to.

These things either weren't thought through far enough, or else it was assumed that you wouldn't be able to come to these realizations yourself, especially if you're also trained to always make excuses for the god by either shunting blame to man, or claiming that the mystery is too great for man's puny mind to understand.

To somebody not burdened by such a confirmation bias, arguments like these are deal killers for belief in your god.

Jesus on the other hand is a different story. I can't say definitively whether the man Jesus, the person, existed or not. Maybe he did. If he did, there's no question he was a very, very good person and serves as a model, or a guide, for goodness in others. I tip my hat to Jesus' teachings, as I understand them.
I used to think that.

Did you see these?
http://www.topix.com/forum/topstories/T0N0LOR...

Do you still think that Jesus is very, very good now, or that he should serve as a model? Aren't you already just as good as he was? How does he outperform you on the goodness scale? Would I be worse off patterning my life after your moral values than Jesus'? I'll bet not.

What aspect of Jesus' life was exemplary?

Where does Jesus explain how to love, or demonstrate it? Sure, he talks about it, but where does he teach it?

I have another view re regrets, and that is, if we do our best at whatever is thrown in our life's path, there should be no regrets in the true sense of the word when our best was born of God's love. If there be a sorrow, it is only amplified in heart ache because of that real love... but definitely not a regret. For me then, the lessons learned through this have been only to strengthen my faith and growth in areas that I would never have dreamed otherwise possible had I not persevered. True Love has no regrets... in reality when we live for God. I know no other way...

Not according to your earlier comment - not if neither you nor anybody else could tell the difference.

Besides, you haven't defined what you are referring to losing. If I posit the existence of a quality called "wee frill" and said that you had it, and also that if you lost it, nothing would be different, you would know that I talking about nothing at all.

Your god fits into that category as well. What would the world be like if it wasn't answering men's prayers, or giving the gifts of the spirit to people? It would be indistinguishable from the world we live in, where prayer cannot be demonstrated to have any effect outside of the head, and Christians have no more gifts than anybody else.

That's how you know when you're talking about nothing.

<quoted text>Where in the bible does it say, "it's okay to talk to dead people"?, since you're in the mood to quote scriptures
Good Morning Mike. I don't know of any verses off the top of my head. King Saul had made it against the law to be a medium. And then had his men find one and he asked her to call Samual. And Samual did come forth. I would say to not call into the spiritual realm unto those who have passed on. There is a difference in calling on some one that has passed on and someone that has passed on giving you a message. This too, I would recomend taking to God. The Holy Spirit is the only Spirit I would recomend calling on. If someone says that they have had an experience. I can not say they have not. Unless the Spirit of God tells me that it is a lie. If she had said that she was calling on spirits that had passed on, I would have recomend that she not. The Spiritual realm is no joke. And is not something to be played with. Most all, know little to nothing of the spiritual realm. Read this forum. It is arguments about the physical realm. All of these "smart people" acting like they know it all. They know nothing. There is much on the spiritual realm in the Bible. But, few even notice what is said. They skim over it and take out what they are looking for. So, if this is your problem, alow me to make it clear. Do not play with the spiritual realm. The physical does not control the spiritual. the spiritual controls the physical. Let the Holy Spirit guide you. And, be guided by no other spirit.
