I guess that I missed that, too - the genius part. Instead of a genius, I saw a guy that kept shooting himself in the foot. I saw a guy that was lavished with gifts and opportunities, but threw it all away violently and self-indulgently.
I saw a guy who was unable to be a friend to others even a tiny bit. I saw a guy who, from the depths of failure, lectured the rest of us on living.
He despised Catcher, polymath and me in particular. We all tried to help and befriend him, but he was like a wounded bull. He argued with us each in our fields of expertise based on his jailhouse education, including constitutional law with Catcher, and math and physics with polymath.
What was the genius part you saw? His wit? His charm? He had a little of each, but they were diluted and antagonized by his stubborn, bellicose, foolishness. He threatened us all with violence. He seemed committed to isolation, hostility and failure, and I considered him dangerous.
It's a conundrum. How do you study a subject that is infinitely smarter than you are? How do you know that she isn't just fuckinwith ya? What questions could you ask? What answers would you expect?

RiversideRedneck wrote:
I know you've got a fixed 'biblical image' of earth stuck in your mind, but you're wrong. You should note that all of the biblical passages you are referring to are in prophetic, apocalyptic sections of Scripture, where, unlike Genesis, figurative language is frequently used. A discerning, thoughtful and caring reader would be careful about interpreting these phrases literally.
Jibba Jabba. There is no substance to this. You merely dismiss opinions with the wave of a hand and a pronouncement about figurative language right off of the list:

[3] It's an allegory, not literal.

By the way, which biblical passages did I refer to? I summarized about two dozen. Are they all in the "figurative" part of the bible?

THE EARTH IS FLAT

[1](Isa 40:22) It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to live in.

[2](Dan 4:10-11) Upon my bed this is what I saw; there was a tree at the center of the earth, and its height was great. The tree grew great and strong, its top reached to heaven, and it was visible to the ends of the whole earth.

[3](Mat 4:8) Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor

[4](Job 11:9 ) Its measure is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea.

IT HAS CORNERS

[5] Isaiah 11:12 -... and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the FOUR CORNERS OF THE EARTH.

[6] Revelation 7:1 - And after these things I saw four angels standing on FOUR CORNERS OF THE EARTH, holding the four winds ...

AND EDGES

[7] Job 38:13 - That it might take hold of the ENDS OF THE EARTH, that the wicked might be shaken out of it?

[8] Jeremiah 16:19 -... the Gentiles shall come unto thee from the ENDS OF THE EARTH

[9] Daniel 4:11 - The tree grew, and was strong, and the height thereof reached unto heaven, and the sight thereof to the ENDS OF ALL THE EARTH

[10] Job 38:13 - that it might take the earth by the edges and shake the wicked out of it

THE EARTH SITS ON PILLARS

[11] 1 Samuel 2:8 - The pillars of the earth are the LORD's, and he hath set the world upon them.

[12] Job 9:6 - Which shaketh the earth out of her place, and the pillars thereof tremble.

IT IS FIXED AND UNMOVING

[13] Psalm 93:1 - "Surely the world is established, so that it cannot be moved"

[14] 1 Chronicles 16:30:“He has fixed the earth firm, immovable.”

[15] Psalm 96:10:“He has fixed the earth firm, immovable ...”

[16] Psalm 104:5:“Thou didst fix the earth on its foundation so that it never can be shaken.”

[17] Isaiah 45:18:“...who made the earth and fashioned it, and himself fixed it fast...”

AND THE SKY IS COVERED BY A RIGID SOLID DOME

[18](Gen 1:6-7) And God said, "Let there be a dome in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters."

[19](Psa 148:4) Praise him, you highest heavens, and you waters above the heavens!

[20](Gen 1:14-17) And God said, "Let there be lights in the dome of the sky to separate the day from the night

[21](Job 37:18) Can you, like him, spread out the skies, hard as a molten mirror?

[22](Prov 8:28) when he made firm the skies above

[23](Job 22:14) Thick clouds enwrap him, so that he does not see, and he walks on the dome of heaven.

If there's anything you'd like to understand better about your bible, please ask.

The flat earth society is, and has always been, a pretty much dead society. It never grew more than 3,000 followers. You're being dishonest by using them to claim that Christians believe in a flat earth or that bible says the earth is flat.
FAIL

You really have no interest in evidence or reason, do you? Nor are you interested in truth. You simply have decided as an act of faith that you bible didn't say or imply what it clearly does, and then begin rejecting all contradictory evidence including scripture ('it's from the figurative part of the bible') and organizations dedicated to the interpretation you don't want to acknowledge.

You say that there are only 3000 people in this organization that disagrees with you? How many people say that the bible does not describe a flat earth?
RiversideRedneck wrote:
The "four corners" of the bible are referring to cardinal direction, not a literal four corners.
Where does the bible say so unambiguously? It doesn't. Your claim has no merit than the opposite - that it literally refers to corners of the earth. Less, actually, since there are an unlimited number of other ways to say figuratively that there are four cardinal directions - perhaps a reference to the four winds - but only one way to say that it has corners. More from the Grateful Dead:

"In Franklin's Tower the four winds sleep
Like four lean hounds the lighthouse keep
Wildflower seed in the sand and wind
May the four winds blow you home again"

It makes no sense for skeptics to even claim that, because in one sentence you'll claim the four corners is 'proof', then the next you'll say the circle of the earth is 'proof'..
Who claimed that those words are proof of anything other than that the bible contradicts itself even in its description of a flat earth. It contradicts itself further when it says that the earth is immovably fixed on pillars, and hanging or suspended.
RiversideRedneck wrote:
Given the biblical allusions to the earth’s sphericity in Job 26:10; Proverbs 8:27; Ecclesiastes 1:6; Psalm 19:6 and Isaiah 40:22 and the fact that the ancients long before the time of Christ had figured out that the earth is a sphere, there is no reason to imagine that Christ or his disciples actually thought the earth was flat and that the wind only blew in one of four directions.
Allusions to sphericity?

Job 26:10 - He has inscribed a circle on the face of the waters at the boundary between light and darkness.

Proverbs 8:27 - When he established the heavens, I was there; when he drew a circle on the face of the deep

Isaiah 40:22 - He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in.

Ecclesiastes 1:6 - Blowing toward the south, Then turning toward the north, The wind continues swirling along; And on its circular courses the wind returns.

Psalm 19:6 - The sun rises at one end of the heavens and follows its course to the other end. Nothing can hide from its heat.

A circle is most definitely not a sphere. On is flat, the other not. Do you put an ice square in your drink, or an ice cube? Do the Egyptians have triangles at Giza, or pyramids?

By the way, those last two weren't referring to the earth. They referred to the apparent paths of the wind and sun respectively, which obviously cannot be spherical.
