If one reads aroundÖ.many of the Christian posters that (I found) could be respected and admired on here, are gone. I for one would hate to see the few that are left leave. The reason that many have simply walked away in my honest opinion is due to disrespect, it is not a new thing so please do not think that I am suggesting that new posters are to blame. Angry posters come from all walks, Christian and non-Christian alike and they are hard to deal with. It is much more easy to simply walk away for most, than to end up in a pointless argument. When I find myself in a discussion with an angry poster, I try to stop posting to them. AnnieJ helped me see the error in what I was doing the other day when I kept responding to a poster. When she said something to me, I looked at what I was writing and went O_O (Thank you for that Annie) At the moment (for the most part) I am just reading blanket statements being tossed around that I will not argue, yet they are making me consider walking away from here myself. If we as individuals do not stop and look at how our words might affect the people we tend to value on here, the value of being here is going to disappear just as quickly as posters do. I am not asking anyone to change what they believe, or how they think, nor am I suggesting that my own departure would be more than a blip on the ol' radarÖ.what I am asking for is that the posters whom donít want to just give this place up to the trolls, please take a bit more care when it comes to the choosing of your words to make a personal point - Christians and non-Christians alike. We can not be people pleasers, but we can respect the fact that we are discussing beliefs/opinions and that they truly do matter to each of us as the individual. In other words: I do not have to agree with you, to take care with my own words when I type to you. As a Christian scripture is important to me. The main reason that I came to this thread in the past was to read Epiís 3 morning postís, as I enjoy them and find reading them to be a good way to start my day on Topix. I donít mind discussing scripture if there is an honest question, have never used scripture to simply back my own opinion, or to smack another person over the head. I have always had an issue with the Bible being used to smack at othersÖ.this bothers many Christians and non-Christians alike. How can we openly discuss the issue if the Christians that it bothers, are gone from the thread? Just my opinion on the subjectÖ.sorry for the ramble.
I am relieved to read this my friend! I thought twice about writing that...but I thought you would get my intent.

I still talk to one of the Christian posters that left here. I am sorry this thread has lost him. He...you...OYE are part of the very few that I have felt comfortable truly discussing with. There are others that I respect but they are not in to these deep debates. I can respect that.

Anyway...thank you for reading my "advice" in the spirit that it was written in.

Thanks for that, Juice. You're halfway back.
I'm guessing that you'll be told that your faith was inadequate, you never knew your god, you were never filled with the spirit, and that all of your churches were unusually incompetent and self-serving.
What else can they say? That you're right about the local churches not being interested in local causes?
Ask yourself why they should get the tax breaks given a charity when they aren't any more of a charity than you or I are. We also give a few percent of or wealth away. I'll bet almost everybody does. But we're not exempt from paying taxes, because charitable work is not our primary mission. Supporting our families is. Charity is a small part of what we do, just like churches.
So why are churches getting a better tax break than we do? For what?
Ah maybe it is because Churches provide food clothes, gas to help those who find themselves without any to get home and yes even housing when possible. Iím not talking about a rich Church either, just one where the congregation cares.

Most of what he write is just plain old hogwash. He doesn't know what he is talking about.

It's simple, quite simple.
You gave up Christianity, you should not be struggling anymore.
It does not matter why you left. The reasons for you leaving Christianity is not important, except maybe for you.
You should not be struggling with ANY concept of Christianity, whether it be doctrine, dress code, behavior, whatever it may be.
Why are you struggling with a philosophy you gave up???
That like I saying I struggle with how some buddhist dress or how buddhist talk. Tiger Woods is a buddhist, how come he wear what he wear and do what he do and I [struggling] with that.
I don't care anymore. It's in the pass, I gave it up. I don't [struggle] with anything Buddhism does or represents.
So why are you struggling with ANY concept of Christianity??
You should not care, and you should not be struggling. That's illogical and contradictory. It's like you regret or have second thoughts or something. That's a divided mind which only causes suffering.
Have you ever bought the wrong toilet paper trifecta? I like the extra soft and by mistake I picked up the extra strong. I am not sure why extra strong can not be extra soft at the same time.

Guess what...they won't let you return it after opening...especially if it shows signs of use.

Which do you prefer...extra soft or extra strong?

BTW I use the brand that has bears poopin' in the woods. You know those bears that walk around with toilet paper stuck to their butts. I watch that commercial and just say...REALLY???

You tell me. I find all of this citing of scripture and talking about praying for one another disgusting. You seem so weak and ineffectual.

Also, why are so many of your lives in such shambles if you have the help of a god? A lot of good that does you. What are you getting for your tithes?

And why are you grateful for such divine indifference? Doesn't that make you an enabler and co-dependent of a negligent god? It's pretty disgusting to witness, like a battered or neglected wife making excuses for her husband.

Anyway, if you're interested in how your lives appear to the non-Christian community - and you should be - that was one person's take.

So how about you having a discussion with a Christian and you put away whatever childish mythical notions and fairy tale pseudo-science reasonings you have to how this universe and everything in it came to be.
fair?
I have put aside my childish mythical ideas a number of years ago. I can and will discuss anything with anyone who is willing to discuss, but not preach or not condemn. Once a person reverts to those things he has already lost the discussion because he is showing that he can't debate so he must attack.

I am not really into or knowledgeable about psuedo-science, but having a science background, I know that a lot of things that people who are into mythical creations and mythical superbeings are not using what should be their adult brains to reason out what they think.

If you wish me to throw out all that you think is psuedo-science, are you willing to live in a world that does that? That would include you giving up all things electrical, all things run by fossil fuels, all forms of transportation other than human or other animals to carry you, all of the knowledge you have today which you have gained only because of the findings of science, and the technology that has permitted that knowledge to be at your fingertips.

Psalm 18

1 I love you, Lord, my strength.
2 The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer;
my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge,
my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
3 I called to the Lord, who is worthy of praise,
and I have been saved from my enemies.
4 The cords of death entangled me;
the torrents of destruction overwhelmed me.
5 The cords of the grave coiled around me;
the snares of death confronted me.
6 In my distress I called to the Lord;
I cried to my God for help.
From his temple he heard my voice;
my cry came before him, into his ears.
7 The earth trembled and quaked,
and the foundations of the mountains shook;
they trembled because he was angry.
8 Smoke rose from his nostrils;
consuming fire came from his mouth,
burning coals blazed out of it.
9 He parted the heavens and came down;
dark clouds were under his feet.
10 He mounted the cherubim and flew;
he soared on the wings of the wind.
11 He made darkness his covering, his canopy around him
the dark rain clouds of the sky.
12 Out of the brightness of his presence clouds advanced,
with hailstones and bolts of lightning.
13 The Lord thundered from heaven;
the voice of the Most High resounded.
14 He shot his arrows and scattered the enemy,
with great bolts of lightning he routed them.
15 The valleys of the sea were exposed
and the foundations of the earth laid bare
at your rebuke, Lord,
at the blast of breath from your nostrils.
16 He reached down from on high and took hold of me;
he drew me out of deep waters.
17 He rescued me from my powerful enemy,
from my foes, who were too strong for me.
18 They confronted me in the day of my disaster,
but the Lord was my support.
19 He brought me out into a spacious place;
he rescued me because he delighted in me.
20 The Lord has dealt with me according to my righteousness;
according to the cleanness of my hands he has rewarded me.
21 For I have kept the ways of the Lord;
I am not guilty of turning from my God.
22 All his laws are before me;
I have not turned away from his decrees.
23 I have been blameless before him
and have kept myself from sin.
24 The Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness,
according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight.
25 To the faithful you show yourself faithful,
to the blameless you show yourself blameless,

This not make any sense.

If you comparing your Christianity [struggles] with buying wrong pair of toilet tissue you might as well not try.

After the roll of toilet paper finish you forget it. No one not going to struggle for yrs after they buy a bad roll of toilet tissue iyai!!

You go to a restaurant, the food bad. You not struggle with that for yrs. you buy some laundry detergent and your clothes not smell as clean, you not struggle with that for yrs. you either throw it away and go buy a different detergent or use it until it done and no use it anymore and forget about it.

So comparing your Christian [struggles]with buying the wrong toilet tissue is ridiculous illogical and not make any sense.

Psalm 18 Cont...

26 to the pure you show yourself pure,
but to the devious you show yourself shrewd.
27 You save the humble
but bring low those whose eyes are haughty.
28 You, Lord, keep my lamp burning;
my God turns my darkness into light.
29 With your help I can advance against a troop
with my God I can scale a wall.
30 As for God, his way is perfect:
The Lord’s word is flawless;
he shields all who take refuge in him.
31 For who is God besides the Lord?
And who is the Rock except our God?
32 It is God who arms me with strength
and keeps my way secure.
33 He makes my feet like the feet of a deer;
he causes me to stand on the heights.
34 He trains my hands for battle;
my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
35 You make your saving help my shield,
and your right hand sustains me;
your help has made me great.
36 You provide a broad path for my feet,
so that my ankles do not give way.
37 I pursued my enemies and overtook them;
I did not turn back till they were destroyed.
38 I crushed them so that they could not rise;
they fell beneath my feet.
39 You armed me with strength for battle;
you humbled my adversaries before me.
40 You made my enemies turn their backs in flight,
and I destroyed my foes.
41 They cried for help, but there was no one to save them
to the Lord, but he did not answer.
42 I beat them as fine as windblown dust;
I trampled them like mud in the streets.
43 You have delivered me from the attacks of the people;
you have made me the head of nations.
People I did not know now serve me,
44 foreigners cower before me;
as soon as they hear of me, they obey me.
45 They all lose heart;
they come trembling from their strongholds.
46 The Lord lives! Praise be to my Rock!
Exalted be God my Savior!
47 He is the God who avenges me,
who subdues nations under me,
48 who saves me from my enemies.
You exalted me above my foes;
from a violent man you rescued me.
49 Therefore I will praise you, Lord, among the nations;
I will sing the praises of your name.
50 He gives his king great victories;
he shows unfailing love to his anointed,
to David and to his descendants forever.

I try to share my thoughts on something as I did earlier with you concerning changes as I know them to be when it comes to what I see in Christianity. You see what happens when I do...someone comes along and tries to turn it in to more.
I didn't share more in my previous post about those thoughts...I am not up to some great debate today. I am certainly not up to and won't defend what I said.
Christianity has changed...at least that is what I see. How it got to me not being able to defend why I left...I do not know.
I just see differences...I am not sure when those differences happened. Maybe they were there the whole time...maybe I didn't see them because of the area that I grew up in...maybe I was sheltered from those differences. I don't know.
To give you a hint...
We were not allowed to wear pants to church. Now people show up with whatever they happen to have on.
Drinking...foul language...smoking...all of that was "sinful".
Trifecta has made more out of my usage of the word "struggle" than what was intended. Those beliefs that I had then formed and shaped my concept of Christianity. When I used the word "struggle" I only meant that I still carry that "concept"...it is what I was taught and what I believed for many years.
This Annie is why we have to focus and center our full attention on Christ Jesus and him along, if you follow up behind what the people around you are doing you will likely always be led astray, but something in your post that I want to focus on and ask you when you made reference to women wearing pants, we too do not believe in that also as we believe the Bible teaches that a woman should not wear that which pertains to a man, and vice versa, just out of curiousity, what denominational teaching were you brought up in.

All of those modern inventions you mention are based on applied science or scientific technology.

That has nothing to with pseudo-scientific theories as to how this universe and all that's in it came to be.

If you have those false science notions as to how this universe and all that's in it was formed, then they are childish fairy tale guesses. And when you put those away, then maybe we can have an adult conversation as to how this universe was formed.

And when you put those mythical fairy tale notions as to how this universe was formed, we come back to a Creator.

You know the foundation of the Christian beliefs, tell us the foundations of [your]beliefs. Then we will see, who the adults are.

Wrong. Atheism need no evidence is its support.

Atheism meets our standards, which are evidence and reason based. You have none for you god claims, therefore atheism. Rational skepticism and Occams Razor, you know. They require the application of doubt, reason, evidence, critical thought, and causal parsimony. Faith and supernaturalism can't meet those criteria.

As for meeting your standards, it is of no interest to us whether you acknowledge and accept any of that or not. We're not waiting for Christians to see the logic in our positions, apply critical thought or reason, understand science, or even to be intellectually honest.

I've noted over the years that many people who are lukewarm and only half serious about their salvation right down to complete unbelievers often don't mind hearing about the love of Jesus toward us all, they generally want the world and do not mind have Jesus "thrown" into the mix as well so long as the preaching is all flowery and feel good sermons, but so many do not want the Word to come and convict them of any of their wrong doings to clean them up in their lifestyle and so they then become offended and fall away from the Lord completely.
Telling people of the love of God through his son Jesus Christ is the primary and most important message that we as believers are suppose to carry, but a stern warning against rejection and the wages of sin should also be made known as well, albeit not neccesarily in a harsh and demeaning manner.
Peace.
Perhaps the problem is where you pick and choose to do that. Is sabotaging a discussion to tell people where they are going wrong in their lives and to tell them things they have likely heard thousands of times before about the horrible fate that awaits them really being heard, or is it, as appears, just ticking off people because it gives the impression that you think you are a perfect "saved" person while the rest are all sinners, and that your opinion about how life should be lived is the "correct" opinion?

I strongly suggest, if you want a platform for your proselytizing, that you pick a street corner, where people can walk by, if they don't want to hear you, or a policeman can move you on if you are actually restricting the rights of others in that environment. Why pick a discussion site with a posted topic, that some people might actually want to discuss, rather than be preached at?

Another suggestion is ask your minister if you could preach in your church some Sunday, or whatever day you usually go to church, if you do.

Easy for you to say. Men just do the shake and go dance.

It might make sense to someone that is leaving their church due to rough toilet paper in the bathrooms! Especially the one-ply paper...not good at all. I call it service station paper.

I went to this one church...they didn't even have bathrooms. It wasn't as simple as going outside either...it was surrounded by a cemetery. It just didn't seem right...peeing in a cemetery. I was not about to piss on someone's grave. So...we had to hold it till we got home. Some of those services just seemed to go on and on too.

Have you ever wondered what they used in Biblical times...for toilet paper. Where I grew up...you had to learn real quick what poison ivy/sumac/poison oak leaves looked like! YIKES if you used the wrong leaves!!! Now that for sure would make you lose your religion.

That might be a good idea. You really should keep your religious tastes and practices to yourself - like sex.

I don't really care what consenting adults do behind closed doors. I'm very broad minded in that regard.

But why do these Christians have to flaunt their religious orientations and practices in public, and shove it down everybody's throat?

Some of you are flaming Christians, walking around with your bibles showing and crucifixes dangling where people can see them. Is that some kind of signal so that you can identify one another?

Some of you have bumper stickers that say things like, "Warning. I break for rapture." I don't even want to know what that is. Keep it to yourselves.

I once ran into two Christians praying together behind the bushes in a public park - in broad daylight, and when I was with my kids. I was horrified. I don't want them seeing that. I covered their eyes and hurried them along.

And I wish that they would warn us on TV when a show contains religion. I don't mind nudity, violence, coarse language or adult situations. I couldn't imagine watching too many movies with none of them.

But religion offends me.
