HL is correct. This is the part you're not grasping.Whether something is true doesnt mean it cant be bigoted if that truth is being used as an unrelated slur. why would it be insensitive to say you a filthy gay liar then if I believed it to be true that you were dirty and dishonest?
You've said before that you feel a persons sexual orientation is inherent, just as being black or white or tall or short is something that is a part of someone. People have no choice in their sexual expression from birth, hair color, skin color, height etc.. Those are states of being, conditions or characteristics that humans are born with.
In other words, they aren't beliefs.
I can say: "You lying Libertarian bastard!".
That isn't a bigoted statement. It may be a poor choice of words in how you feel about another person, but it isn't bigoted.
If I say: "All Libertarians are lying bastards!"
That is a bigoted statement - and also - a poor choice of words.
Tide has been pointing out that same concept as well.
Exchange any named belief set, Vegetarian, Model Airplane Enthusiast, Wood Carver, Socialist, Democrat, Christian, Hindu or Muslim - for instances - with *Libertarian* in the two above examples and it will hold true.
This has been covered before, and specifically addressed to you. http://www.topix.com/forum/topstories/topstor...
I'll also restate this again; I think a case could be made in which if you use the Libertarian or Christian ideology(or any Institution/ideology) as a means to escape criticism or opinion, by saying it is bigoted to give an opinion about you or a group would be an instance in which leveling the charge of bigotry against another could be bigotry in and of itself.
I think all beliefs are open for criticism, examination and even condemnation at times - they should be open to that type of scrutiny, else we lose all freedom - and it isn't bigoted to express those views or opinions, as long as we avoid blanket statements as pointed out above.
