I think when people notice how much better Christianity is when you remove most of it, they'll realize that at base, it's just a myth created by ignorant superstitious bigots.
That's the best thing about the Christian church - it performs its greatest service to mankind by evaporating. It has never done more for the West than it has in the last several decades by wasting away.

What is interesting is that some these batshit crazy types are themselves heretics, for one reason or another. So according to orthodox church teaching they will be suffering the torments of hell as well. But in their breath-taking arrogance, they they ASSUME that they will be saved.
They deserve hell more than you or I.

I am very grateful to these posters for frankly sharing the love of Jesus as they have been taught it. And it is my pleasure to help share their words with others.

Its difficult to say what real ChristiansTM are, as different groups believe different things concerning salvation, the Bible, the Eucharist and other things. And individuals within the groups have different ideas. A pick and chose of what bits suit their personal belief systems.
What they believe isn't even part of my definition of Christian, which is based entirely on what they do, as I discussed with Seraphine a few weeks ago. The following is called a functional or operational definition:

"I tend to base the definition not on doctrine in the abstract so much as on the part one plays in society. If you vote for candidates because they are Christian, or you support various political positions because you think Jesus wants you to, or you buy into and propagate characteristically Christians positions such as that atheists and gays are abominations, premarital sex is sin, or that evolution is "just a theory," then you are functionally a Christian to me whether you pray to saints, baptize by sprinkling or immersion, or go to church on Saturday or Sunday. I just care whether you support Christianity with your words, your votes, and/or your dollars. If you do that, you're a Christian to me." http://www.topix.com/forum/topstories/T0N0LOR...

==========

Just a word on operational definitions: these are the kind of definitions that allow you to identify when you are in the presence of the definiendum by noting its effect. Defining a Christian by what he believes - or, in the case of believers, whether he will be going to heaven - is inadequate, because there is no way to tell who is a Christian.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operational_defi...

Defining them by what they do is more useful, since we don't really care what they believe anyway except to the extent that it informs their actions.

Ahhhh.... lucky duckies :) Do you have male and female? I would really like another puppy, but only have Pugstar and he can't do that on his own LOL. My old girl, Puggy, had a feast of chicken (her favourite) for her last meal.... still miss the Queen but my heart will hold a place for her forever!!

I used to believe that they didn't poop, either, but the medical books didn't support that.

light turned yellow, just in front of him. He did the right thing, stopping at the crosswalk, even though he could have beaten the red light by accelerating through the intersection.
The tailgating woman was furious and honked her horn, screaming in frustration, as she missed her chance to get through the intersection, dropping her cell phone and makeup.
As she was still in mid-rant, she heard a tap on her window and looked up into the face of a very serious police officer. The officer ordered her to exit her car with her hands up..
He took her to the police station where she was searched, fingerprinted, photographed, and placed in a holding cell.
After a couple of hours, a policeman approached the cell and opened the door. She was escorted back to the booking desk where the arresting officer was waiting with her personal effects.

He said, "I'm very sorry for this mistake. You see, I pulled up behind your car while you were blowing your horn, flipping off the guy in front of you and cussing a blue streak at him. I noticed the 'What Would Jesus Do' bumper sticker, the 'Choose Life' license plate holder, the 'Follow Me to Sunday-School' bumper sticker, and the chrome-plated Christian fish emblem on the trunk, so naturally....I assumed you had stolen the car."

Have to agree with you on that. Perhaps by not accepting any religion's doctrines, I have to accept responsibility for my own beliefs. Maybe everyone just wants a scapegoat ? Oh wait! Isn't that the whole of Christian ideology ? Not sure why people are so afraid to face the consequences of their actions.

Something sick about relishing in having Jesus tortured and murder for his thought crimes to avoid one's own deserved fate. Sounds like the desires of cowards.
Agreed.

Substitutionary atonement is inherently immoral, as is punishing descendants for the sins of the father. It's all about accountability.

If a man looks at a naked woman through her window, he's guilty of being a peeping tom.

If a woman looks at a naked man through his window, he's guilty of indecent exposure.

You have to remember, you are on a forum as Why Should Jesus Love Me? I could understand you being upset on the topix page Why I am No Longer a Christian... But, you are not on this subject, and you will receive many people and different views from Christians to try to help you understand "Why Jesus Should Love You".
Good point. You are right. I should be more tolerant of being preached at in a place where that is expected.

Of course, my objection to Brother Lee Love wasn't about him preaching in general, but in blaming me for the failure of the religion to produce what it promised.
Knowledge wrote:
I don't believe they mean you any harm.
I'm sure that you're correct. They mostly mean well. And those that do, and who do not want to offend, will benefit from knowing what puts unbelievers off. I'm sure that Brother Lee Love meant nothing against me by his shunting the blame from his god to me. He probably feels obligated to do that.

But it's offensive nevertheless, and was counterproductive.

I'll forgive this, since it wasn't on the list when you saw it.

I doubt it.

Why do so many Christians simply ignore the possibility that we aren't all lying - that we simply find the god unbelievable and the dogma untenable.

It's pretty offensive to the bulk of skeptics to imply what you did without any way to know. Do you really think that my character is so dilute that I would hide from a god that I believed in? If I were a believer, I'd likely be a zealous Christian. I was until I stopped believing. I have never shirked my moral responsibility as I understand them - not since I was a minor.

The influence and power of organized religion must be limited, subjugated, because it pushes guilt, shame, fire and brimstone, the very opposite of freedom ..
.. you may say, "I don't agree with that philosophy, I'm not that type of Christian," but you silently agree to sustain a power structure that encourages atrocities and human misery by endorsing and advocating a belief system rife with hypocrisy. That makes you complicit ..
Well said. And that is my operational definition of a Christian: anybody that facilitates the church's agenda. This definition includes people like Dave Nelson and Buck Crick, who at times claim that they are not Christians. Who cares? They get angry at criticisms of Christianity and argue the same arguments in defense of its church as those that claim that they believe the doctrine. Then they argue for tax breaks for the church, and against abortion rights.

Buck goes ballistic if you call the impregnation of the minor child Mary statutory rape. He considers it deeply offensive. Then denies Jesus was a god. Who can be bothered with what he actually believes? He's just as much an enabler of the church as any non-tithing Christian.
Happy Lesbo wrote:
.. the very destructive nature of organized religion must be addressed or mankind will unconsciously stroll down a well-trodden historical path of war, poverty and human misery. That is AIN's, and my, contention ..
Agreed.

If what the believer wants is to be left in peace to pray and study her bible, I'm all for her. If she thinks that Jesus' ideas should apply to you or me, there's going to be contention. Neither of us cares what Jesus thinks about anything.

I wonder how many of the faithful reading our words the last few weeks had never heard any of that. They certainly never heard it in church.

And I wonder if any believe it?
