It is a really good verse. I especially like the point about doing so in his absense as anybody can act a certain way when they know they are being watched or there will be consequences. When we do the right thing even though nobody will see it and nobody else will know is when we know we are following His path. And everybody has to find their own way.

Might someone sacrifice themselves for a loved one? Some would. Would they do it for a stranger? Would they do it for their enemies? Would they forgive their torturer? I can't think of any situation throughout history where someone endured horrible torture on behalf of even the people torturing them so that they could avoid paying for the consequences of their actions.
Christ endured such suffering knowing some of the very people he suffered for would continue to mock him and not believe in Him. He suffered so that all men would be drawn to the Father because it was his desire that all men come to the knowledge of the truth and be saved. When man ever evolves to the point where despite his innocence he would suffer so greatly for the possible benefit of even his torturers which he forgives, then he can speak of sacrifice.

Until then, Jesus Christ will always be the one who made the greatest sacrifice to me.

Me too. And even beyond his physical suffering while on the earth... I believe He feels the pain of each one who suffers or has ever suffered. By coming to the earth in human form, he forever identified Himself with us, both in suffering and in joy.
