Goodness, all the war hero, CEO, entrepreneur, multi-millionaire, jet-setting royalty that I know have never even heard of Topix.
I will not speak to your terms of "war hero" and "jet setting", but you are basically incorrect, at least in part, on the rest of this statement. You might be surprised by how many of the wealthy, or CEO's, or entrepreneur's actually know of and visit this site. I personally know for a fact the President of ETSU, the CEO of Mountain States Health Alliance, and the President of United Coal all have referred to this forum. I am not talking about this thread, but Topix as a forum. I sit on a board of directors of a company much larger than mine and this forum has actually been discussed in a board meeting.

What lures these types of people to this forum is the mention of their organization or their company on this forum. That is how I discovered this forum. Once people start reading what is posted about their company or their organization, they continue to check this forum for other references to their company or organization. Some, like myself, see this forum as a form of entertainment. You have to admit, some of the more radical posts on here are pretty amusing. Some, like myself, had no idea there were people who harbored such radical thoughts. Yes, the more vulgar and insulting posts are a distraction from what entertains these types, but every form of communication has some dirt to sift through to get to the prize. You might consider taking part in an effort to thwart the more disrespectful posts to help improve this type of correspondence. And before you reference any disregard of disrespectful posters of the conservative type by me, I have indeed chastised those of my political beliefs for misbehavior. It did no good, but I have tried. I have seen no such effort on your part.

To put it simply, if you have a question or concern with a local business or corporation, you might try posting it on here and including the name of the corporation in the title. You might be surprised who actually reads it.

I agree in part OT, but disagree with a lot of this. Below are my reasons why -
Overtaxed wrote:
<quoted text>
Think about it for a minute "Pete". Boomers like me are going to be dependent on those kids for our Social Security checks, yet they are told in each election cycle that S.S will not be there for THEM and if it is it will be in a diminished capacity.

I was told this exact same thing starting my career. This didn't deter my ambition nor do I think it deters the drive and initiative of those who have ambition. The SSA's eventual success or failure did not ever deter me from voting nor any of my comrades at that time.

The ACA which I support, depends on those kids to keep it solvent for people your and my age.

There are many people who do not have to depend on the ACA for health insurance. I have yet to find an individual in their early 20's who has an interest in how the financially disadvantaged obtain health insurance. Besides, they can ride their parents health insurance if they need to.

These kids are told a college education is the key to a good wage, yet politicians WE voted in have stood back and allowed the cost of a college education spiral out of control until only wealthy kids get out of school without a pile of debt.

I disagree avidly on this. If you have good grades in high school, you qualify for the HOPE scholarship. There are numerous scholarships and grants available for financially strapped college prospects. There are hardly any for ones who can afford it. Also, the government gives a tuition tax CREDIT to those with less than wealthy incomes. In fact, a college student can file taxes individually instead of being claimed as a dependent and get some of their tuition refunded to them, even if they don't have a job. They can also work their way through school. Lack of money should not be a deterrent for those ambitious enough and with enough initiative to seek funding that is available to them. If you are a minority, the amount of grants and scholarships is limitless.

For these kids, there is nothing like the defined benefit pension for 10 or 15 years of dedication to a company. They get a 401k which they must contribute to, and which is subject to the whims of Wall Street, and I wouldn't want Wall Street watching my billfold.

I don't see saving for one's retirement a bad thing. Also, pension plans are just another form of compensation. For example, a company may be able to pay $20/hour with no pension, or $15/hour with a pension. Pensions don't just fall out of the trees. There is a cost somebody has to pay. Also, there are choices in a 401K that have nothing to do with Wall Street. Those who are willing to accept risk will choose Wall Street. Those not willing will want U.S. securities or bonds of some type. 401K's teach saving. I don't think there is anything bad about that.

For these kids the company paid health insurance plan is a dream. Every young person is now required to contribute to the cost of that policy through employee contributions and increasing deductibles and co-pays.

Just like pensions, health benefits are a form of pay. No benefits, higher wages. More benefits, less wages.

Wages for average workers in the jobs these kids are lucky enough to get, have been flat for years.

Wages have been flat, the additional costs of these employees has not. The total cost of labor is wages plus benefits and taxes. This determines what wages are.

On election days I usually ask if anyone needs a little time off to go and vote. A young man who worked for me told me he wasn't voting and would spell anyone who wanted to leave.
I asked him WHY he didn't think it was important and he said "Those politicians all work for people like you, not people like me"

I've asked the same exact thing except I was told "I was too tired," or "I had a date" or "I don't know where to vote", etc. In short, the laziness factor was prevalent in their excuses.

Thank you for your understanding Tired. At least you can cross party lines regarding the more vulgar posters. You have my respect and I appreciate your common sense attitude. It is very refreshing.

Regarding 123, you have a point. 123, would you be willing to help cease the hatred on here by not instigating good ole Sassy? All this does is incite more vulgarity from her and we can't simply criticize her for her profanity when one of our own is showimg some examples of it as well. Killing her with kindness is probably a more effective anecdote for her type. She hates any type of goodness. Just a request and thank you.

I seem to remember back when Clinton first ran for President There was a lot of talk at the time about the 3 trillion debt. One of the shows I listened to was talking about the cost of welfare and they said that there had been over 3 trillion spent on all forms of public assistance since it's inception. Now I don't know how true it was and did not look it up but I thought it was interesting how the figures coincided like that. Makes you wonder, huh?
