Sounds pretty unsettling for workers, but at least Toyota has a strong record of keeping them on the payroll training and performing other tasks around the plant even if they aren't making vehicles. Toyota proved it by keeping plants like the truck factory in San Antonio open for months even though it shut down Tundra pickup production in 2009 due to lack of demand from cash-strapped buyers.

Training the sheeple to build bland cars that refuse, at times and inexplicably, to stop when the driver wants to.

Really?
Such a broad brush condemnation?
Well thought out and truthful assessment?
Or just more paranoid anti Toyota rhetoric?

Guess where my vote is!

I was surprised to learn GM and Ford use japanese parts in their autos. Hopefully they will look now for domestic sources.

Right after they announced they were going to make 10 million cars/trucks per annum in the near future. Well, this'll temper their aspirations.

That is only part of the equation; These plants are supported a by a huge chain of suppliers that wont be able to keep people on payroll.

Which is the point. Exposes the vulnerability of siting one's eggs in various global baskets when one needs to make an omelet, here in The United States for example.

It's reality nevertheless, and not likely to change any time soon.
If anything, the future global "basket" will become far more diversified than it is now.
That is, if we don't render the world extinct in the meantime!

Note--all this negative talk about the alleged "risks" or "downside" in the globality of business has to be put into perspective.
Fact....
"Taking "Risks" is what made America the industrial and economic powerhous in the world--until just recently.
Here's the upside...
A much broader global economy opens up far more opportunity for "Risk" takers--a fact of life!
The reality...
Let's hope those same "Risk" takers still exist in America, because the success or failure of America lies squarly in the laps of such folks.
The real "downside"...
I fear the willingness to take "Risks" has significantly declined in the US, and has been usurped by an insidious culture of "comfort, greed, and self indulgance".

Risk aversion; the theme of this decade. Or, strain everything for the contaminants which Japan will be forwarding to unsuspecting rubes globally. Nice to see Toyota having to idle production here in The United States.
