According to Toyota "we’re currently spending over a million dollars an hour to enhance the technology and safety of our vehicles."

1,000,000 x 8,765 hours in a year=$8,765,000,000

Toyota only made 2.2 billion in 2009 and 1.2 billion in 2010.

Plus the expense is "over" or more than a million dollars an hour.

Where is the other 5+ billion dollars coming from?

@liner - OK, so a standard work year is 2080 hours.(40 hours per week x 52 weeks.) That is still 2.08 billion dollars per year.

When I worked in Japan most of my colleagues worked 7 days a week. That would be 2.912 billion dollars per year.

Toyota only PROFITED $2.2B in 2009. Their total revenue was about $19B. The R&D comes out of the $19B, not the $2.2B.

I questioned the plausibility of that figure when I first heard the ad too. It's definitely a large number, but not completely inconceivable.
