From what I've been able to tell the Alawite belief system is closer to the Bahais than to Sunni Islam. Alawites believe in reincarnation and some sort of godhood trinity.

This all makes them heretics in the minds of the Sunni majority and unfit to rule Syria. The Alawites are in charge of all military units and will fight to the death to keep it that way. If they should falter there would be a Muslim Brotherhood type state where it would be disastrous to be Christian, Alawite or otherwise non-Muslim.

So don't expect there to be a political solution ever. Just for giggles, here's a report from February about Lebanese Alawites and Sunni killing each other:

Certainly, the police and military are also "Syrian people". The point you misunderstand is that Arab loyalty is first to their clan, then to their denomination (Sunni, Shia, Alawite), after that to their religion (Christianity, Islam) and only last to their country.

The Sunnis want a Sunni in charge of Syria and if that happens the Alawites, Christians etc. will face hardship, maybe extermination. Bashir and his father realized that the top military officers controlling soldiers had to be Alawites. If they should fail then a massacre of non-Sunnis is likely. That's the Arab mentality.

Yes, there have always been divisions in our population based on religion. However, this is a fight over sovereignty, and an attempt to overthrow the Syrian government. As President, Assad has pledged to defend Syria against all enemies, whether they be foreign or domestic.

THE SYRIAN ASSAD ASSKISSER IS OF Arab heritage WHICH has been maintained DUE TO HEAVY INBREEDING!!!

First cousin marriages in Muslim communities are putting hundreds of children at risk!!

extensive research into a little-known problem in the Muslim world: the disastrous consequences of Muslim inbreeding brought about by the marriage of first-cousins.

The practice of marrying close relatives, which has been prohibited in the Judeo-Christian tradition since the days of Moses, was sanctioned by Muhammad and has been going on now for 50 generations (1,400 years) in the Muslim world.
This practice of inbreeding will never go away in the Muslim world since Muhammad is the ultimate example and authority on all matters, including marriage.

Genetic disease in the Arab world

Riad A Bayoumi (bayoumi@squ.edu.om), professor of clinical biochemistry, Anne Yardumian, consultant in haematology

College of Medicine and Health Sciences, Sultan Qaboos University, Muscat, Sultanate of Oman.

Haemoglobin disorders, inherited metabolic diseases, neurogenetic disorders, and birth defects are common among Arab populations.13 The relative human and economic costs of these diseases are rising because of the decline in prevalence of infectious diseases and improved but expensive medical care available to affected people. As Al-Gazali report in this week's BMJ, although many programmes to control genetic diseases have been adopted in Arab countries, most are poorly developed.46 A shift in public, political, and professional attitudes is needed to establish comprehensive services.

Several factors contribute to the high prevalence of genetic disease among Arabs. Some conditions such as sickle cell anaemia are the result of the advantage that the heterozygous carrier state affords against malaria. In some countries up to two thirds of marriages are between cousins, which increases the incidence of recessive disorders.3 Couples tend to marry young and family size is usually large; children born at an advanced maternal age have an increased risk of chromosomal disorders such as Down's syndrome do to HEAVY INBREEDING.

NOW WE KNOW WHY THE SYRIAN ASSCLOWN IS RETARDED!!

Syria is in fact an hereditary monarchy and Bashir Assad is in fact a king, though he calls himself a President. The Assads took power through military force in 1970 and have stayed in power through military force since then. The Alawite monarchy has no legitimacy and it that regard is similar to most other Arab states.

It's probably best that the present Syrian civil war should drag on endlessly. The criminals in charge will be distracted from foreign terrorist activities.
