No, I don't think that quotation applies to lance Armstrong. He was
never a hero, but only a false hero, one who masses of people
believed in, but beliefs and reality are not the same thing. Since
he was not a hero, more of a charlatan, his downfall is not tragic,
only fate, karma if you like. Oriana Fallaci wrote about fate in her
novel Inshallah: Fate hates calculators. Those who think they got
it figured out and can beat the game at its own rules. Fate has a
way of undoing such people. Probably not all of course, no doubt many sociopaths become politicians and finaciers. Those with conscience will pay a price as Dostoevsky pointed out, but even those like Armstrong who had no conscience, a personality disorder type, fate sometimes catches them in their own arrogances and devices. No, he was never a hero, and he wouldn't have confessed if he wasn't between a rock and a hard place. Just your average run of the mill narcissist.
