Looked through NEIC site and turns out area is as complex as described.
1st event was a transform movement almost N-S or E-W (most likely latter as result of compression of S. part of Azerbaijan arc (epicentre lies in arc graben).
2nd event of similar size was a thrust event as a result of jog from 1st event loosening the surface. This one was compression,(vector NNW-SSE) via Elburz/Caucasus convergence with the epicentre again in the occluded arc graben.
Aftershock sequence appears to be relatively widespread and delineates the upper part of the arc graben NE of Tabriz.
As for the effects, Earthquake versus Mud brick construction... Earthquake wins.
The death toll is in fact relatively low as the area of the 1st transform event epicentre is relatively sparsely populated (NE of Tabriz), and everybody was in panic mode (street dwelling wailing in odd voices & headbutting tarmac), immediately prior to arrival of 2nd quake. panic mode may be responsible for several minor head injuries before, during, & after 2nd event, but more likely secondary effects of that type would occur in area near Qom, or Tehran.
All quakes in the series are relatively shallow (in the rubble pile), at ~10Km depth or less reducing the spread of the shockwaves, while kicking the odd stray sheep into the air above the epicentre (more wailing in odd voices).
Have a nice day: Ag
