Hurricane Sandy Likely to Be Biggest of Late October Surprises

The obsession over this storm, the panic, is unbelievable. Of course, hurricanes which hit Florida aren't news; ones which come up the coast and threaten the Holy City of New York are earth-shattering events which cause time and events to come to a screeching halt.
I'd love to see it go out to sea and amount to nothing, if only to make the panicky NEasters look stupid.:)

We in Florida know what these storms are capable of but it's been a very long time since New York has been hit by a good one. Imagine something like Katrina or even Andrew hitting NYC. What will 30' of storm surge do to the subway system? The underground electrical system? What if it freezes before the water recedes? You're looking at massive destruction of many building foundations. A massive blackout is bad enough in the summertime, what about in freezing or near freezing conditions? What will 100+ mph sustained winds do to the buildings and the windows? Not sure if they're up to hurricane building codes. Decent sized hurricane on one side, blizzard on the other. I'm glad I'm not up there.
Good luck, you guys.
