Guest commentary: Catholic Church should rethink its stand on gay marriage

There are 30 comments on the www.freep.com story from Nov 25, 2012, titled Guest commentary: Catholic Church should rethink its stand on gay marriage. In it, www.freep.com reports that:

"Ubi caritas, Deus ibi est." Loosely translated, it means, "Where there is kindness, God is there." It's something that was ingrained in me during my seminary training. Look for love, and there you will see God.

The Roman Catholic Church will wind up on the ash heap of history just like Gorbachev's Church did.

Why specifically "Gorbachev's", especially since he initiated both perestroika and glastnost?

I was just referencing communism and it's association with the words "ash heap". Since he was the last General Secretery of the Party.....

btw, I'm reading a good novel now in the "alternative history" genre about a Soviet invasion of Europe in the closing days of World War II.

You know nothing of God. You only know hatred. You're lower than swine.

No truly Christian Church can ever affirm what God condemns:
Leviticus 18:22 - You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination.
Leviticus 20:13 - If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Their blood guiltiness is upon them.
Romans 1:26-27 - For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error.
I Corinthians 6:9 (NIV)- Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.
I Timothy 1:8-11 (NASB)- "But we know that the Law is good, if one uses it lawfully, realizing the fact that law is not made for a righteous person, but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers and immoral men and homosexuals and kidnappers and liars and perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound teaching, according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, with which I have been entrusted."

Robert Conroy's "Red Inferno". It's very good. I first heard of him a few years ago when I by chance ran across his novel "1901" about a German invasion of the U.S. which began in Suffolk County, Long Island, which is where I am from. If that excerpt hadn't been on the back cover, specifically mentioning Suffolk County, Long Island, I probably would not have picked up the book.

It was filled with historical characters such as President McKinley, Vice President Theodore Roosevelt, Admirial Dewey, and many more. It as an excellent book, and the first novel I had ever read in the "alternative history" genre.

I read a lot, and 99% of what I read is non-fiction.

And I have found that you can get many books very cheap by buying them on ebay, and then reselling them on ebay when you're finished reading them. In fact, I have actually resold books for more money than I paid for them, just by buying them, reading them, and then reselling them on ebay.

Five verses taken from a book with over 31,000 verses. Yet somehow these handful of verses MUST be followed today despite the fact that none of them are dealing with actual, committed homosexual couples.

Your god got lots of things wrong in his big book - slavery, misogyny, genocide. Somehow "true christian churches" don't seem to care that they aren't following these obviously immoral precepts. They don't even mention the immorality of the biblical stances on these issues, all of which get MANY more verses than these supposed admonitions against homosexuality.

Why is that?

He won't respond, because he can't.
He doesn't have anything else, but he considers it his calling to "inform" others of his beliefs. He lives in a closet of his own choosing, and needs to validate his tortured choice to do so.
That's about as sad as it gets.

I don;t think the Catholics will reconsider till after their upcoming and inevitable schism, which will happen sometime before the Great North-South Nuclear War.

In the meantime, I would ask why is "promiscuity" a sin as this man states. It might not be healthy if unsafe sex is performed but that is not intrinsic. Sexual pleasure by mutual consent, providing both partners are aware of each other's health status - and in the case of heterosexual sex, fertility inclinations - has no reason to be condemned.

"Sin" is an artificial notion made up by religion to condemn non-violent behaviour not directed at one's fellow humans or at the natural world. Catholics and Muslims are the worst when it comes to labeling thing as sins.

One thing that stuck out for me is where it says the Catholic Church teaches that some people are born gay!

"It is not that I am unaware of the church's position on homosexuality. I have read "Always Our Children," and I know that we believe that some people are created with a homosexual orientation. I know that our church teaches that those created with such an orientation should remain celibate."

Big change from it's previous stance. And it sure puts a kink in the claims by other religious anti-gays that sexual orientation is a choice.
