I believe the point was that the media should be careful not to look too "pro civil rights", otherwise it could look like they are biased against those that believe basic civil and human rights should be denied to people we don't like.

While over all I think the article is well written 1 phrase gives me some pause. "The media must be even-handed on this divisive issue, but they might also take a page from a small Mississippi paper that bigotry shouldn't deter them from treating gay couples fairly." IMHO no they don't need to be "even handed" they need to be fair and they are not always the same thing.

I remember the good old days when we had both a Liberal and a Conservative newspaper in town. I read one in the morning (Liberal) and one in the evening (Conservative). I miss those days, because now we have only the Liberal Post-Dispatch, as the Conservative, Globe-Democrat, closed up shop years ago. We no longer get a balance in reporting, op-ed, or commentary.

Yeah, I'm an anachronism. I still read books, too. I find it hard to curl up on the couch, under a blanket, with my 17" laptop. And I'm too cheap to buy a Kindle.

I don't want to buy batteries made of irreplaceable rare earth elements (from a China global monopoly) to do read something that only needs energy once to manufacture, and only sunlight to use.
