We are holding a debate and we want your participation.#uqgaymarriage
Sorry, don't Twitter, but thought I'd throw my over-valued two cents worth in here.
1. What does marriage mean?
Absolutely nothing, there is no such critter as "gay marriage", it is simply marriage.
2. With legal rights having been broadened for same sex couples, why is same sex “marriage” an issue now and how it has been successfully made an issue?
Not certain of the history of the movement on this issue in Australia, but in this country it has been an issue for more than 40 years now. It's only in the last decade that we have been able to draw attention to the fundamental unfairness of the state having this sort of say over who we as individuals are choosing to marry. "Being gay" isn't a crime anymore, so why should the sex of the person we are choosing to marry be a limitation on our rights?
3. Whilst there is attention and momentum in the societal debate, why can’t same sex advocates break the legislative dead-lock?
Momentum is on our side, but we aren't quite at the level of an irresistible force just yet and we do still have a pretty much immovable object in our path, religious objections to anything and everything homosexual.
