A: There are no provinces in Russia that have an majority of population that want to be completely independent from Russia. Many are autonomous, and do have their own unique rights.
I wasnt bringing up S. Ossetia, but since you have, what makes you think that Chechnya has 100% more rights to be independent from Russia than S. Ossetia from Georgia? S. Ossetians have voted overwhelmingly to be independent, Chechens have never had that kind of a mandate. Most Chechens do not want to be independent, since they know that being independent means having a Muslim state with tough Sharia laws. Most Chechens are not fundamental muslim many are not muslim at all.
Now, what makes you think that chenya has any rights for independence?
except chechnya, there are few more that i know, there might be even more...have you ever heard about ingushetia,dagestan?...every week in ingushetia russian policemen are being killed 'cause they are considered to be an occupation force.

p.s. chechens never had chance to vote on their independence 'cause russians commited genocide against them, hundreds of thousands were exiled/expelled from their ethnic lands,it'as kind of hard to run and vote at the same time,eh!!!

Yeah, I have heard of Ingushetia and Dagestan, I have been to caucases few times when I was younger.

Chechens were expelled from Chechnya after the war because they sided with Third Reich. But, they have been allowed to come back in the early 50's. As of right now ethnic Chechens are a majority of Chechnya, unlike early and mid part of the century when Chechnya was much more diverse, so no there is no genocide going on or has been. There is a small number Muslim fundamentalists that are forming militias and using general criminal sector of population as its muscle.
Large number of Chechens do not want to be separated. The only country that recognized Chechen republic as a country was Afganistan when it was under the rule of Taliban. This Chechen republic was proclaimed not by a vote but by a leader of the separatist movement.

Caucases were always a troubled region. For hundreds of years there have been tribes that just have evolved separately from each other even thought they might have been living within 50km. Tolerance and civility is not something that they are known for.
