Could robots harvest apples in the future?

Full story: KIMA

With a bumper crop of apples expected this season, many Washington tree fruit growers dream of a day when automated technology helps bring in the harvest.

The average size of an orchard in Washington is about 50 acres, but some cover as many as 3,000 acres and employ 300 or more workers year-round. An estimated 35,000 to 45,000 pickers are employed during the peak of harvest.

The cash cost of production of an acre of apples is about $5200 to $7400, Packing and marketing costs an additional $5,600 to $7,500 per average acre of production, about half of which is labor costs.

Include "robotic hands" into the equation.

Sounds great in theory but soon the robots will start mating with each other and their kids will be American citizens. Before long the Robots will revolt for higher pay and will choose to branch out to other jobs like Teaching or Accounting. We will have to create new and improved super robots to replace the older more traditional family oriented robots. In the year 2025 President Taylor Swift will grant the older generation of Robots amnesty.
