PETAa s war on Groundhog Day

The animal-rights group wants to replace Punxsutawny Phil with a robot. Does shadow-seeking really scar groundhogs for life? Groundhog Day: Harmless tradition, or animal cruelty? Animal-rights advocacy group PETA has launched a full-scale attack on the nation's largest Groundhog Day celebration.

I have always considered myself an animal lover and I think PETA loses touch with reality. Why can't PETA use it's resources for thngs that would actually help the critters like buying land to protect habitat? A robotic groundhog? Give me a break!

If winter doesn't really end and spring doesn't arrive until March 21-22, then how come on Groundhog's Day they say we can have 6 MORE weeks of winter? We already always have 6 more weeks of winter no matter what any groundhog did. This always stuck in my craw, a twist of logic and a social anomaly of a nonsensical holiday that needed solving. Then a few years ago the answer dawned on me.

Going by the older Pagan calendars, there are the Equinoxes and Solstices to denote our present divisions between the seasons. HOWEVER, they also used to honor the 4 "Cross-Quarter" days and had celebrations for them as well. These fall 1/2 the way between the Solstices and Equinoxes.(Another popular holiday being Samhain (pronounced sow-when or sow-wane) today known as Halloween.)

These "Cross Quarter Days" USED TO denote the true start and end of each "weather season". The beginning of Winter would fall on the cross-quarter day between the Autumnal Equinox and Winter Solstice. And end on the cross-quarter day between Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox. Which makes perfect sense. Why would you put the darkest day of the year, the very middle of winter, denoting the START of winter? Frosts are common, lakes start to freeze, and snows sometimes fall around Halloween in the northern latitudes where all these beliefs came from. All are signs of the beginning of winter. Winter would end on Feb. 2nd (again, a cross-quarter day, Groundhog's Day), and then the period into spring, then summer.[Spring originally started on Feb. 1st-2nd and ended on May Day.(The Pagan Goddess of Spring, Eostre, being her main celebration of the resurrection of life in northern climates, bastardized into the "easter" story.) The true Summer from May Day (end of Spring) to Aug. 1-2. The Summer Solstice smack dab in the middle of Summer. Autumn from Aug. 1-2 to Nov. 1-2 (All Hallows' Day, celebrated on the Eve), most leaves are done changing and gone by then. Etc.]

Only in this way could you try to figure out of you had 6 MORE weeks of winter or not, on the cross-quarter day of Feb. 1-2. If Winter actually ENDED on Feb. 2nd by the calendar.

But the story doesn't stop there.

In the allegory/parable of the "Groundhog's Day" story, we have a few players on the stage. The "Groundhog", the "Sunlight", and the "Shadow" (and fear).

Enter the true players' identities:

Groundhog = Pagan, Earth-Worshiper, Derogatory Epithet.

Sunlight = Light, Truth, Present Reality, Visible.

Shadow = The Past, Loss of Wisdom, Loss of Knowledge, Things Hidden, Things Subdued.

When analyzed we now have a story telling how:

If timid Pagans were too afraid of their past (their shadows) in the light of their present day events, didn't defend their past and what they believed and ran back underground out of fear of the truth of what was really happening (worship of the "son"/present-realit y), then the christian calendar would take over. If this happened then forever after we'd have 6 MORE weeks of winter. Until that time that the original Cross-Quarter days were honored again, the Pagan calendar was honored again, and spring really did start on Feb. 2nd again. We'll ALWAYS have 6 MORE weeks of winter until Pagans are no longer afraid of their shadows/past/beliefs/ways and proudly celebrate them out in the light of day.

The whole key to this astounding riddle/lesson was held in the word "more". How deeply and profoundly wise they were to bury this lesson in the new meaning of this Cross-Quarter holiday.(Not unlike how they buried the use of Tarot cards in common playing-cards to retain the significance of them. Or that of how many childhood nursery-rhymes were invented to get some news of those in power past the attention of those in power. Pre-freedom-of-speech days.)

We will always celebrate christians' "Groundhog's Day" and always have 6 MORE weeks of winter until we openly celebrate your own Pagan ancestors' holidays.

THIS is the real meaning and lesson of "Groundhog's Day".

For the record, I've seen lots of groundhogs running around out in the middle of the day. They are not a species that is afraid of sunlight and shadows. Another clue to the riddle above and why the whole holiday now reveals what it does. "Groundhog's Day" doesn't even honor the behavior of groundhogs.

Because PeTA isn't interested in helping the animals. What they are after is CONTROL. They want to control the behavior of their fellow humans and the animals be damned. They couldn't care less what happens to native deer species when they overpopulate and die horrible deaths from starvation and disease just so long as they aren't killed and eaten by human hunters. They want to control what you eat, what you wear, and what you think. The animals are just a front for their true agenda. They think they are "morally superior" to and "more highly evolved" than the rest of the human race and would love to force the human race to abide by their demented philosophy. Does that answer your question?

If you want to help wildlife, buy a hunting license or donate to organizations like NWTF or RMEF. They do buy and preserve habitat and genuinely help preserve our native species for all to enjoy.

i think PETA is an organization that started out trying to do the right thing and has gotten horribly off track in their message. IF they would only go after the abused and starving, factory farms who DO torture alot of chickens, hogs, cattle. There are many animals that need their help, as in The Tennessee Walking horse, a very tortured horse as far as the way they are shod, sored etc. The Premerin mares, another tortured horse, tied for months on end with catheters draining their urine. 24/7 no breaks, no life beyond a standing stall. Come on PETA help the animals that really need your help, keep shutting down those awful pupppy mills, list goes on and on or REAL causes that need help.

I agree.

PETA does do some very silly things. One being the roadside memorial they wanted to be put up for the cows that were killed in Illinois, USA.

Though, one cant deny that PETA have done many amazing things for animals. They have saved the lives of millions of animals, shut down animal testing laboratories, they've gotten many universities to stop testing on animals, they've gotten many people to become vegetarian and vegan and many more great things.

Hopefully as time goes by they put more focus on helping animals and less on publicity stunts.

PeTA didn't even start out trying to do the right thing. All you need to do is listen to the founder and president Ingrid Newkirk to understand that hatred of the human race and not love for animals is at the heart of their philosophy. They simply use the poor animals to attract support and dollars from the uneducated who believe they are helping those animals. HSUS is no better. PeTA will accept your donation (which you believe will go to help suffering animals) and use it to pay for the legal defense of a known "animal rights" terrorist. They use those same donated dollars to finance their DEATH VAN. You know, the one in which they kill those puppies and kittens you see in the commercials. Their lifeless bodies to be disposed of later in some dumpster behind the Walmart. Don't fool yourself, PeTA is no friend to animals and never has been. Their battles are designed to gain control over what humans do behind a carefully prepared facade of improving conditions for animals, even when the long term results of their actions will bring suffering and death to the animals. They endorse and support the use of terrorism and violence to further their cause. They are self proclaimed "press sluts" spending millions of those donated dollars on offensive and useless ads and media blitzes instead of helping animals. There is nothing ethical about PeTA.

Some of PETA's accomplishments include

Got POM, Welch’s, Ocean Spray, Pepsi, and Coca Cola to stop testing on animals

Got Denny's, Lukoil, Mastercard, Visa, and Sears (among others) to stop sponsoring the animal-abusing Ringling Bros. circus.

Convinced Mobil, Texaco, Pennzoil, Shell, and other oil companies to cover their exhaust stacks after showing how millions of birds and bats had become trapped in the shafts and were burned to death.

Got the General Motors Corporation to stop using animals in its crash tests.

Convinced 40 companies, including Adidas-Salamon, Gap Inc., Eddie Bauer, Nike, and Reebok, to refuse to use Indian leather in their products after PETA's investigation revealed horrific abuses

Convinced Ann Taylor, Polo Ralph Lauren, Wet Seal, and many other companies to stop using fur

Got Abercrombie and Fitch, American Eagle, Timberland, and many others to stop using merino wool

Got Target and Giant Eagle to stop selling foie gras

Got Raley's Grocery Store to stop selling live lobsters

Got Duane Read, CVS, Rite Aid, Safeway, and Albertsons to stop selling cruel glue mice traps

Got PETCO to stop selling large birds

Countless perpetrators of cruelty to animals have been prosecuted after PETA wrote to law enforcement officials

You can see more of their recent accomplishments on their website.

I can still get all of the products you mentioned and I can still get bacon and sausage at Denny's. Seems a rather hollow victory when other sources are readily available.
