It's understandable why Chrysler doesn't want to spend millions to repair jeeps manufactured 20 yrs ago, most are nearing the end of their service life, and some are surely gracing auto recycling centers.

Hmmm does the word Pinto come to mind? More than a few died because of that ill design and Ford was held liable years later. That's what happens when you cut corners and use second rate engineers and designers. GM had the same.problem with their late 70s-late 80s.pickup related to.side impact rupturing the fuel.tank which was located outside of the frame, Brilliant engineering!!!
So, we should risk someone burning alive in a rear end collision for the sake of Chrysler's profit margin? And it doesn't matter if they owned the Jeep brand at the time, they assumed all liability when they purchased it.

Thing I'd rather be a cabin boy on Captain Bob's pirate ship then be Chrysler right now...

Yeah, but conversely, how many brilliant pieces of engineering were killed because politicians got involved? The Corvair and Tucker come immediately to mind. The government and the automotive companies could've made cars a lot safer 50 years ago but decided it wasn't cost effective. If you want a truly safe automobile nowadays - spend some real cash and buy a Mercedes.

That would leave many fewer to work on.....i would think it was more about, accepting liability.....
