Luke McDonagh (LSE) and Noam Shemtov (Queen Mary)- we are academics who are currently performing research into Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) licensing. We are supportive of FOSS projects and our research on the subject is ongoing. Our interest in the area has informed this survey. The questions in this survey have been designed to give you as much scope as possible to share any opinions you have.
Our primary goal is to explore the ideology of people involved in the development of FOSS, and in particular to examine the question of what the motivations behind the creation of FOSS software are. In addition we seek to examine how these motivations are expressed via difference kinds of FOSS licences, from 'strong' copyleft licences such as GPL to 'weak' and 'free' licences such as MPL or BSD.
