Taoism of open source

There are 6 comments on the Living Without Microsoft story from Sep 29, 2007, titled Taoism of open source. In it, Living Without Microsoft reports that:

“Lao-tzu has passed us the Tao. In his mouth, there are no teeth but only a tongue. The hard ones (teeth) died, but the soft one (the tongue) lives; the soft power is stronger than the hard power. That's the Tao!”

By Chen Nan Yang on September 29, 2007 Comments 2,500 years ago, the Chinese philosopher Confucius asked Lao-tzu, the founder of Taoism, "What is Tao?" Lao-tzu opened his mouth but said nothing. via Living Without Microsoft

The Tao that can be spoken is not the Tao.

I've also had thought of the relationship between open source technology and Taoism. There are some phenomenal similarities!

For example:
"Think of the small as large
and the few as many.
Confront the difficult
while it is still easy;
accomplish the great task
by a series of small acts."
-Tao Te Ching

The internet allows for the community as a whole to come together and create open source projects like Wikipedia or Firefox.

Remember Microsoft's Encarta? They were giant!...and no one thought 15 years ago that a community based business model for an online encyclopedia would crush a mega giant like Microsoft. Now wikipedia is the 5th most visited site on the internet. Amazing!
and I love your analogy to the teeth and the tongue. There is no doubt that the soft and yielding overcome the hard and rigid. Open source technology is a perfect example.

The open source community will become even more fascinating when we can create persistent holograms of artificial matter :)

I was thinking of holographic coffee tables and the first thought that came to your mind was holographic blow up dolls :)
