Firefighters from 3 departments fight fire at bridge over Housatonic

There are 21 comments on the The Stratford Star story from Feb 13, 2012, titled Firefighters from 3 departments fight fire at bridge over Housatonic. In it, The Stratford Star reports that:

Firefighters from Stratford and Milford are battling a fire burning brush and a bulkhead at the rail bridge over the Housatonic River reported around 10:15 p.m. Monday, Feb 13.

The right and center lanes of I-95 south have been closed, but the state Department of Transportation reported a vehicle fire. Reports from the scene indicate Milford firefighters were shooting water off the Moses Wheeler Bridge to douse the fire.

Around 11:15 p.m. firefighters were directing streams of water from a fireboat onto hot spots to protect the bridge.

The Sikorsky Aircraft Fire Department has sent its boat to the scene. The boat the Stratford Fire Department received when the Stratford Department received a new vessel is not equipped with pumps.

Phyl is right on with this!

The fire department bought a boat and did not think that pumps would be a good idea?

What did they plan to do at a boat fire?

Ride by & take pictures for their web site?

Ask the nearby boaters for fire extinguishers?

Get Terry to come by with the pump-out boat & squirt some sewage to cool things off?

Or call in other REAL fire departments that know what the h*ll they're doing?

Talk about waste.

I bet the volunteer fire departments though to put pumps on their boats....

I thought the fire boat was the old police boat. If it is in fact the old police boat I think it would have a fire pump on it. I also don't think the fire dept. bought the boat. I do believe the FD thinks a pump is a good idea though.

Correction: The old police boat would not have a fire pump on it.

The current FD boat is the old PD boat. It does not have a pump and is not capable of carrying more than a portable pump due to weight restrictions. A portable pump has been requested but funding was denied. It would make sense for Stratford to have a fire boat with a fire pump due to the millions of dollars of boats that are in the area but unfortunately the FD has not been able to secure funding for an actual fire boat. Grants have been applied for and denied as well.

funny how the police needed a new boat but the old one was perfectly fine for the fire guys to use. hmmm, how much do all these boats cost anyway? And is the police boat fixed after they crashed it?

What makes you think the person is disgruntled cop? What makes you think they don't care about human life? I read the post several times and I didn't see where they stated any of that. You shouldn't jump to conclusions.

I did not grace your comment with any charm..just wondered why you seem to consistently poke at FD. I have friends on PD who have conveyed their is a very distinct anger about Fd gettingraises and PD being dissed in their opinion..I apologize if I was off base no offense intended. However I will maintain my stand. There should not be division of both entities...All should be working together for the good of ALL. Don't you agree?
