I wonder if they depend on the same GPS system to do the switching? That would explain the derailment in Jamaica.

They have to blame it on some thing else other then themselves!

Who cares why it stopped playing as long as it stopped. It's annoying. I pump up the volume on my mp3 player just so I don't have to hear it.

I doubt the machines were saying Montauk instead of Mineola since the M7s cant go to Montauk (no 3rd rail), I dont think they are programmed for stations they cant stop at.

IAs a monthly ticket holder may I say I despise those auto-announcements. They're too loud and very annoying. I'm glad they turned them off. Sometimes the announcements are so LOUD or produce just LOUD STATIC you have to move to another car. Has the LIRR ever taken decibel readings ? I've noticed some cars have extremely loud speakers while others do not. The conductors claim they can't adjust the volume. Who designed this system anyway without a volume control ? Additionally you have the auto-announcements combined with the conductor announcements at times. How many announcements do you need !!!!!!!!!! I like to sleep on the train and these announcements are nothing more than a nuisance in my book. ps - if they still need to pursue having automated announcements I would prefer a woman's voice making them !

That explains why the announcement said "Last stop, Piscataway," last night.

The double decker cars have the same system. The article failed to mention it. But on another note - this was one of the first times that Newsday actually addressed an issue I was wondering about. hmmmm

The 2 systems are incompatible with each other and rely on different technology.

No cars are running off the road, no airplanes crashing, so why does the LIRR alone suffer from GPS-itis?
Inquiring minds want to know...

I guess we don't pay the ticket collectors enough to say anything more than "punch day!"

Wonder if the NYC subways have a similar system. They don't seem to be affected.
